Oklahoma has picked up a very intriguing transfer portal quarterback, and considering the Sooners' past success in the portal, there is reason to take notice of this commitment.
Remember, Baker Mayfield originally started his college career at Texas Tech, Jalen Hurts started at Alabama and Kyler Murray started his career at Texas A&M.
So yes, it's noteworthy when a quarterback transfers into Norman. As such, it's being reported that former Mercer quarterback Whitt Newbauer has signed with Oklahoma.
This is according to Pete Nakos of On3:

Newbauer wasn't ranked at all as a high school quarterback coming out of Raleigh, N.C. He signed with Mercer and had one heck of a freshman season. He threw for 1,398 yards and 12 touchdowns compared to four interceptions. He also rushed for two touchdowns, so he can do it with his legs as well.
Mercer went 11-3 and Newbauer earned All-Freshman honors in the Southern Conference.
Now, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables has brought him into Norman to compete with a quarterback room of three, with the recent news of Cole Gonzales transferring to Pitt. At the very least, Newbauer will signify some intriguing depth for Oklahoma.
Newbauer will be a sophomore, and he's going to compete alongside Washington State transfer John Mateer, the likely starter, and sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr., who started four games for the Sooners last season.
Mateer, a redshirt junior, was a team captain at Wazzu last season and threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while also rushing for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. That's 44 total touchdowns, for those keeping score.
New offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle will have a lot to work with when it comes to Mateer, but perhaps the Sooners now have their quarterback of the future in Newbauer.
