New Florida HC Jon Sumrall wants Gators to take cues from Ole Miss

New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall knows he has his work cut out for him in Gainesville.

The expectations are sky high. The expectations are championship-level sky high. If he doesn't get Florida on the path to the College Football Playoff soon, he may not have long in this great new opportunity for him.

The Gators poached Sumrall from Tulane, where he took the Green Wave to back-to-back American Athletic Conference championship game appearances and notched an overall record of 20-8 in two years. Oh, he also led Tulane to this season's CFP, which was a huge deal.

Sumrall is a good coach and a nice pickup for the Gators, but he's still going to need help. He proved he can do it with few resources in the AAC, but now he's someplace where everywhere he turns is a resource, and he wants to use them up.

Recently speaking on the "Outkick Hot Mic" podcast, Sumrall revealed that he wants Florida to take the approach to the NIL and transfer portal era that the Ole Miss Rebels have.

Ole Miss is two wins away from hoisting the championship trophy, and that's largely been because the Rebels have gone all-in on the transfer portal market, and they're also paying players big bucks via NIL deals.

Sumrall watched athletic director Keith Carter and Walker Jones, the director of Ole Miss' NIL collective, put together a championship roster.

He wants to be able to do the same thing at Florida.

“They’re a well-coached, talented team. You can tell they’ve attacked the portal. We’ve talked about alignment, structure, organization within the portal and financially. I think Ole Miss has had great success, not to take anything from Lane, but Keith Carter, Walker Jones – and not to take anything from Pete [Golding], either. But Ole Miss, they’re doing this NIL, rev-share stuff as well as anybody in America," Sumrall said (h/t On3). "They’re paying dudes and they are writing bigger checks."

There are absolutely some "old school" college coaches out there who probably hate everything that has happened in college football. Every offseason has basically become like a light version of NFL free agency, and the recruiting never stops. Now, you have to recruit high school players to come to your school, but then every offseason, you have to retain them.

It's a different world, and the colleges that have been able to adapt have found themselves rising up to the top of this new era. The Rebels are a great example, but they're not the only ones. The Indiana Hoosiers may be the best example, but schools like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech have also embraced the moment as well.

Schools are no longer able to recruit on the strength of their brand alone. Heck, even winning consistently is not the draw it once was.

Ole Miss has figured that out, and it's led to this great CFP run. Sumrall doesn't hold a grudge against the Rebels for that. In fact, he wants Florida to follow their path.

“And kudos to them, good for them. They’ve got a great, I think, plan that we all need to learn from and emulate," Sumrall said.
