Jayson Tatum's season-ending Achilles injury was not the only injury issue the Boston Celtics had to deal with in the playoffs. Their other superstar, Jaylen Brown, was also playing through a major injury that had been bothering him at the end of the regular season.
According to a report from ESPN's Ramona Shelburne on Saturday, Brown was playing through a partially torn meniscus that was no doubt limiting him during the team's postseason run.
Further tests in the coming days will reveal if he needs to undergo surgery this offseason.
Brown had been playing through pain in his knee toward the end of the regular season and was receiving pain injections as reported by ESPN. He did not play in the final three games of the regular season but was able to return for the start of the playoffs.
He appeared in all 11 Celtics playoff games, averaging 22.1 points per game.
The Celtics were eliminated by the New York Knicks in six games after losing Friday's game at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks are a great team and have a legitimate chance to win the NBA championship this season, but the injury issues to Tatum and Brown certainly played a big role in the outcome of that series. It is also a harsh reminder as to how difficult it is to not only win a championship, but to also repeat as a champion.
Championship seasons require talent, coaching, the right matchups and an incredible amount of luck that often times gets overlooked. Luck is not always about the ball bouncing your way in a certain moment or getting the right call. It can also be about having your best players healthy at the right time of year. The Celtics did not have that at crunch time this season. They were never going to be able to overcome that.
