Red Sox legend criticizes team's handling of Rafael Devers

The Boston Red Sox have faced some serious criticism over their decision to trade Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, and some of the latest came from franchise legend Manny Ramirez.

The Red Sox traded Devers to the Giants in exchange for two MLB pitchers and two prospects. Most people were stunned by the deal, though there had been tension between Devers and Boston's brass since the offseason.

Ramirez, who is one of the greatest players in Red Sox history, was asked about the trade during a Monday interview with MLB reporter Hector Gomez. The 12-time All-Star ripped his former team.

"The Red Sox handled this Devers situation pretty badly. They should have talked to him since the beginning about him moving to a different position and not just drop that on him during spring training," Ramirez said. "It was wrong by the organization and shows the lack of the experience from the GM and the lack of a clear guide within the team. They should have never treated Devers that way.

"Devers was humiliated (by the Red Sox). It's not about pride or ego. I think the team didn't respect him or communicate with him properly. I'm sure they didn't do that to Clemens. I can't imagine the Yankees telling Judge, 'Now we're moving you to catcher.'"

Devers was moved from third base to designated hitter this season after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman, who won a Gold Glove last year. Throughout the entire offseason, Devers made it clear that his preference was to continue playing third base. Devers was so unhappy about being moved to DH that he hinted he could request a trade.

The issues seemed to subside for a while, but the situation turned ugly again after Boston first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury in early May. The Red Sox went to Devers to ask about the possibility of him playing first base, and he publicly blasted the team's front office in response.

Ramirez had previously offered to help Devers navigate the complicated situation in Boston, but it doesn't sound like the two ever connected.
