Rare Super Bowl rematch set for 'Monday Night Football'

ESPN has secured one of the biggest fish on the NFL schedule. The Super Bowl LVII rematch is headed to "Monday Night Football."

"Monday Night Football" play-by-play announcer Joe Buck was ecstatic about the news that ESPN landed the Eagles-Chiefs rematch.

"It's gonna be amazing," he told "NFL Live." "I cannot believe that we are the network that gets to call that. I mean, you know every network put their two cents in to try to get it and we got it."

He likened himself and color analyst Troy Aikman to "two little kids comparing Christmas presents on Christmas morning," when they received word that they'd be calling Eagles-Chiefs II.

Their Christmas miracle wouldn't be possible without the expanded 17-game schedule. Kansas City plays the entire NFC North this season and only plays Philadelphia because both teams finished first in their divisions and the AFC West and NFC East were aligned this season.

Super Bowl LVII was as competitive as anyone could have hoped. While it ended anticlimactically, the Eagles proved their worth by going toe-to-toe with the more established Chiefs.

In 2014, NFL.com highlighted six Super Bowl rematches that occurred the following season. Since then, Carolina and Denver met in a Super Bowl 50 rematch in 2016. The following year, Atlanta and New England played in a Week 7 Sunday night game after the Patriots won Super Bowl LI.

In the eight previous rematches, the Super Bowl winners are 6-2. The Buffalo Bills were the last Super Bowl loser to win a rematch. They beat the Dallas Cowboys in the 1993 regular season. The Vikings are the other Super Bowl loser to win a rematch, beating the Chiefs 27-10 in 1970.

In more recent years, the Patriots (2017), Broncos (2016), Seahawks (2014) and Packers (1997) followed championships with regular season wins against their Super Bowl opponents.

Thanks to the stars aligning, we get a Super Bowl rematch a lot sooner than we usually would, and "Monday Night Football" gets a major win.
