The Toronto Maple Leafs received very bad news during their training camp, but a potential solution has already emerged.
Toronto lost its fourth-line center, Scott Laughton, to a lower-body injury in Thursday's preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings.
However, it quickly emerged through Daily Faceoff that David Kampf is expected to take his place, accompanying Steven Lorentz and rookie Easton Cowan.
But there is an administrative matter. Kampf, 30, was recently placed on waivers. The Czech player must clear waivers before he can be activated. If not claimed, he can be part of the Leafs' roster and sent down to the AHL when necessary.
The estimation of the portal makes sense, since Kampf is a prototypical fourth-line center, with defensive characteristics, is reliable in coverage without the puck and is useful for closing difficult shifts. The expectation is not for high offensive production, but to provide order in the defensive third.
Kampf can offer danger reading and positioning in front of the slot. That is, a reduction of second chances. He also has the profile for transition play, with a safe first pass after recovery, and simplicity for exiting the zone. Regarding faceoffs, the Czech adds value in defensive draws and in special situations. Furthermore, the veteran would fit with his wingers.
With Lorentz, he complements his physique and forecheck, acting as an "anchor" that balances the line. With Cowan, he would offer coverage for the rookie to explore in the high-pressure areas. Kampf can recover the puck to activate the young forward.
Kampf, therefore, could be a functional bridge for Toronto. Without brilliance, but with what is necessary, so the fourth line does not collapse without Laughton.
