LSU makes needed coaching change after embarrassing home loss

The LSU Tigers' 49-25 blowout loss Saturday has sparked a major coaching change across college football.

LSU fires Brian Kelly

According to On3's Pete Nakos, LSU has decided to fire its head coach, Brian Kelly. The decision comes after Kelly and athletic director Scott Woodward reportedly got into a heated conversation Sunday afternoon.

Kelly arrived in Baton Rouge before the 2022 season and will finish that tenure with a 34-14 record. He went 3-0 in bowl appearances but failed to match the championship aspirations that come with being the head coach at a prestigious program like LSU.

How did LSU get to this point?

Rumors of Kelly's dismissal have swirled since LSU won just nine games last season, the first time in Kelly's tenure that the team failed to reach double-digit wins.

LSU has dropped three of its last four games, ultimately leading to the demise of a coach who was once considered one of the best coaches in college football.

What's next for the LSU Tigers?

Obviously, the LSU job will be one of the premier job openings when the coaching carousel gets turning after the season. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, former Penn State head coach James Franklin, and Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman will likely be at the top of the list for potential replacements next season.
