It remains unknown if New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers will try to play again this season coming off the torn Achilles he suffered on Sept. 11, but he at least managed to leave teammates with one highlight-reel moment from his debut Jets campaign on Friday.
As shared by Rich Cimini of ESPN, Rodgers made a leaping interception during Friday's practice as the Jets prepared for this Sunday's game at the 9-4 Miami Dolphins.
"Jumped up and caught it with one hand," offensive tackle Duane Brown said about Rodgers' defensive play. "He contested a catch and picked it off."
Jets head coach Robert Saleh previously revealed that Rodgers "pushed it a little bit" during Thursday's practice but wasn't yet participating in 11-on-11 drills. The deadline for the Jets to either activate Rodgers or decide to leave him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season is this coming Wednesday.
"It's definitely impressive seeing him out there and the progress he's made in such a short time," star wide receiver Garrett Wilson said about the remarkable recovery Rodgers has made from a setback thought to be a season-ender back on the first Monday night of the campaign. "I mean, he's special. The mindset, the way he goes about his treatment -- all of a sudden, you find yourself back, ready to play here pretty soon. It's crazy."
Rodgers seemingly intends to return as the Jets' QB1 for at least one more season. That fact coupled with the result of this Sunday's matchup between 5-8 New York and Miami could impact the 40-year-old's status through and beyond the Christmas Eve home game against the Washington Commanders. Ahead of the weekend, the ESPN Football Power Index gave the Jets just a 0.3% chance to make the playoffs. Oddschecker had the Dolphins as 9.5-point favorites against Gang Green as of late Friday afternoon.
For now, Rodgers will continue to work as if he's playing against the Commanders on Dec. 24.
