Could Giants' Drew Lock lose backup QB job to Tommy DeVito?

Some New York Giants fans are convinced it's a matter of when, not if, backup quarterback Drew Lock will replace Daniel Jones in the starting lineup this fall.

For a piece published Monday night, NFL reporter Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post suggested that Lock could lose his spot on the roster to 2023 undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito by the end of August.

"If Drew Lock doesn’t clean up his nonchalant fundamentals quickly, he might find himself in a summer battle with DeVito to be the backup instead of pushing starter Daniel Jones," Dunleavy explained. "DeVito still holds the ball too long against the pass rush, but his arm strength pops."

Lock signed a contract with the Giants in March that reportedly included $3M in incentives related to playing time and performance. He allegedly wasn't offered a chance to compete with Jones this summer, and it's since been said that Lock hasn't blown anybody away with his performances in springtime practices.

DeVito, meanwhile, went 3-3 as a starter with the Giants during his rookie season and is familiar with the offense run by head coach Brian Daboll. The 25-year-old may never develop into a full-time QB1 at the highest level with any club but showed flashes at times last fall that he could eventually become at least a career backup who can hang around the NFL into his 30s.

"A strong spring could force the Giants to start thinking ahead about how to make room for three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster so that DeVito isn’t exposed to waivers, which would mean he collects a bigger payday," Dunleavy added about what could become a different type of quarterback competition than some Giants fans expected as recently as earlier this month.

Jones is recovering from the torn right ACL he suffered on Nov. 5 but seems on track to be cleared for contact well before Week 1 arrives.

Daboll reportedly has Jones penciled in as his starter heading into mandatory minicamp, and DeVito made it known earlier this month he isn't settling for becoming a forgotten figure inside the club's quarterback room.

If nothing else, Dunleavy's update hints that Lock isn't close to leapfrogging Jones on the depth chart at this stage of the process.
