Novak Djokovic overcomes knee injury, making history at French Open

A nagging right knee injury didn't stop Novak Djokovic from breaking records at the French Open.

On Monday, in his match against Francisco Cerundolo, Djokovic used a medical timeout after tweaking his knee in the second set, per the Associated Press.

He then had his trainer massage his knee on the sideline. Clearly, the injury hampered him, as he fell 2-1 in sets and trailed 4-2 in the fourth.

However, Djokovic overcame the pain and mounted another spectacular comeback, defeating Cerundolo 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. This marks his 370th victory in a Grand Slam match, breaking a tie with Roger Federer for the most match wins at major tournaments.

The 37-year-old also set a men's record for consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals (59).

For Djokovic, this is the second straight match that has lasted four or more hours. In the third round against Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 1-ranked player in the world fell 2-1 in sets but clawed back, winning after 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Djokovic admitted he's not entirely sure how he pulled off another hard-fought victory.

"How did I find the way to win again? I don't know," Djokovic told the crowd at Court Philippe-Chatrier following the match, via the Associated Press. "The only explanation I have is you. Thank you."

Djokovic will face No. 7 Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. He defeated Ruud in the French Open final last year.

The oddsmakers think Djokovic has a solid chance of securing his 25th Slam title. As of Monday, FanDuel gives him the third-best French Open odds (+550) behind Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
