Major curveball in Lakers coaching search is a blow to JJ Redick

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly closing in on a new head coach.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowskiski, the Purple and Gold are 'targeting' Dan Hurley from the University of Connecticut.

"After historically dominant back-to-back national title seasons, Hurley has emerged as the most coveted coach in the sport -- and the possibility of him leaving UConn and the Big East Conference for the Lakers has massive implications for both college basketball and the NBA," Wojnarowski reported. "Hurley has constructed a juggernaut that has lapped the sport -- culminating with the NCAA's first repeat champion in 17 years."

Hurley would be a wise choice for the Lakers. He has proven himself at the collegiate level. If given time, he could improve the players at his disposal in Los Angeles and work toward building sustainable long-term success with the franchise.

Nevertheless, the announcement will come as a blow to JJ Redick. The former NBA sharpshooter has long been viewed as a leading candidate for the job. Hurley's emergence will likely end Redick's chances of entering his first head coaching job with a roster led by LeBron James.

Redick also missed out on the Charlotte Hornets job in recent months. Charles Lee of the Boston Celtics will move into that role at the end of the season.

The Lakers' job would be a tall order for Redick. He has no experience on an NBA coaching bench and his experience as a player isn't guaranteed to translate. Hurley is a proven winner. He has implemented an impressive system with the Huskies and shown elite player-management skills.

Rob Pelinka is making a decision that benefits the franchise. Hurley could build a long-term career with the team. After opting to part ways with Darvin Ham, the Lakers are making smart decisions in their coaching search. Unfortunately for Redick, he will likely need to wait a while longer before landing his first head-coaching role. However, that might be in both his and the Lakers' best interest.
