Watch: 17-1 underdog Dornoch wins Belmont Stakes

The 156th running of the Belmont Stakes saw Dornoch, a horse with 17-1 odds, shock the field and win the third leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday.

Ridden by jockey Luis Saez, Dornoch kept pace early with the field of 10, which included Kentucky Derby champion Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey, winner of this year's Preakness Stakes. Down the stretch, Dornoch moved to the front of the pack, holding off a late run from Mindframe to win.

For trainer Danny Gargan, it's his first Triple Crown win. It's the second for Saez, who also won the 2021 Belmont Stakes aboard Essential Quality.

Dornoch comes from good stock, being the little brother of Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner. Like its younger sibling, Mage also faced steep odds (15-1), ridden by jockey Javier Castellano, who had previously been 0-15 in runs at Churchill Downs.

Meanwhile, Dornoch is co-owned by ex-MLB outfielder Jayson Werth. After the race, the former All-Star compared the victory to winning a World Series, which he did as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008.

"This is as good as it gets in horse racing — as good as it gets in sports," Werth told Fox Sports

This year's race was unique in that it didn't occur at Belmont Park, which is undergoing $455 million in renovations, but instead at Saratoga Race Course in New York. Likewise, the distance had to be shortened from 1.5 to 1.25 miles due to the dimension difference between the two venues.
