Shane van Gisbergen makes literal late push to win Xfinity Series race at Sonoma

For the second straight week, Shane van Gisbergen proved he can run with the big dogs of NASCAR.

Subscribing to the idea that eight wheels are better than four in a corner, van Gisbergen pushed race leader Austin Hill wide on the race's final restart, relegating Hill to fifth and giving van Gisbergen a lead he wouldn't relinquish, even with Sam Mayer and Sheldon Creed breathing down his neck.

The win was van Gisbergen's second straight, as he was also victorious at Portland International raceway last week. With two technical road courses stacked back-to-back, many fans thought the abbreviated West Coast swing would be van Gisbergen's chance to make a statement and van Gisbergen did exactly that, picking up two wins while moving up to 10th in the Xfinity Series points standings. With his win at Portland, he also locked himself into the playoffs, ensuring he'll have a chance to battle for the championship.

Cup Series regular Ty Gibbs was SVG's strongest competition for most of the night, until a crash took him, along with Brandon Jones, Josh Williams and others out of Saturday's race.

The crash set up a restart where the aforementioned Hill pulled away, aided by power issues that had plagued van Gisbergen for much of the race. Despite his car willingly dragging him down, however, van Gisbergen kept in touch with Hill, maintaining a front-row seat for the final restart with 11 laps to go. After moving Hill out of line, van Gisbergen pulled away from the rest of the field, coasting to victory in wine country.

Sheldon Creed once more finished second, while Mayer slotted in third. Road-course ace Austin Green came home fourth on a career day and Hill finished – surely frustrated with the late race contact between himself and van Gisbergen – finished fifth

Despite heavy damage in the 'Big One', Chandler Smith limped home to finish seventh, with points leader Cole Custer adding to his consistent season via a ninth-place effort.

Other notable finishers include Jesse Love in 12th, van Gisberben's teammate AJ Allmendinger in 17th, road-course ringer Boris Said in 28th and Gibbs in 35th.

The Xfinity Series will be back next Saturday, June 15, at the Iowa Speedway. The race will go green shortly after 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on USA Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
