Dan Hurley has built something special at UConn, but it was built on a championship foundation that was laid years before him under the great Jim Calhoun.
The Huskies have one of the most — if not the most — decorated trophy cases in college basketball. The men's team has won six NCAA championships, including the last two in a row under Hurley, and 11 championships on the women's side.
The Huskies are college basketball royalty, and even though NBA royalty — the Los Angeles Lakers — were strongly perusing Hurley to fill their vacant head coaching position, the word from both Adrian Wojnarowski and Hurley himself suggests that what UConn has is too valuable for him to leave.
Even more valuable than a courtship from the Lakers — who boast 17 championships of their own.

Per Woj, the chance to win three championships in a row at UConn was too much for Hurley to pass up.
As swept away as Hurley became by the Lakers courtship and vision for him, he ultimately couldn't walk away from a chance to make history and pursue a third straight NCAA title. Even before Lakers talks, Hurley already had a UConn offer to become one of highest paid NCAA coaches…

It's worth noting that even with the losses of starters Donovan Clingan, Stephon Castle and Tristen Newton to the upcoming NBA Draft, UConn is expected to be amongst the top contenders to win March Madness again in 2025.
Even if Hurley doesn't pull off the three-peat, though, he clearly has a great thing going at UConn.
