Should Yankees try to replace slumping 1B before trade deadline?

First baseman Anthony Rizzo is stuck in a slump, and it may be time for the New York Yankees to target an upgrade.

Through 65 games, Rizzo, 34, has posted a .220 batting average, a .279 on-base percentage and a .332 slugging percentage, his lowest figure since his rookie season in 2011. The Yankees also benched him on Sunday and Monday.

"There's no question over the last two, three weeks especially, it's been a little bit of a struggle," Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently said of Rizzo, via The Athletic's Chris Kirschner. "Sometimes you have to get these small little gains along the way to get you where you need to go and sometimes being patient with that — which is hard when you're going through it as a player — you got to have that (patience) a little bit."

Although Rizzo has made three All-Star games in 14 seasons, it's hard to believe he'll suddenly catch fire.

Kirschner suggested the Yankees could try to acquire another first baseman before the trade deadline on July 30, perhaps St. Louis' Paul Goldschmidt or San Francisco's LaMonte Wade Jr. He added New York could move DJ LeMahieu to first and pursue a third baseman instead (San Francisco's Matt Chapman or Houston's Alex Bregman?).

Bregman — entering the final year of a five-year, $100M deal — may be a one-year rental, but he could be the top option. The two-time World Series champion has rebounded in June, registering a .343 batting average, a .425 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage in 35 at-bats.

Regardless, adding an infielder could bolster New York, which seems poised to make a deep postseason run. The Yankees (48-21) are first in the American League East, and FanGraphs Baseball gives them a 14.3 percent chance to win the World Series, second behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (22 percent).
