Given how Russell Wilson’s time with the Denver Broncos ended, expectations likely aren’t set very high for the 35-year-old quarterback’s first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, Wilson is slightly more optimistic about what the 2024 season holds, stating he feels he’s found the "fountain of youth" during his first offseason program with the Steelers and that his confidence is 10 times higher than it was at the same time last season.
While reports out of Steelers OTAs and minicamp have been positive regarding Wilson’s acclimation to his new team, former QB-turned-NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky recently stated during an appearance on “NFL Live” there are two pitfalls Wilson needs to avoid if he doesn't want to concede his job to Justin Fields.
“He will be on the bench if he stresses this defense too much,” Orlovsky said. “I think there’s two ways [QBs do that]. No. 1 — they’re so cautious with the football and they never want to do anything bad, and the defense sits there and goes ‘Alright if we give up 10 points, game’s over because our quarterback can’t score more than that.’ Or they try to do so much, and [Wilson] can fall into this trap of trying to force so much and make so many big plays to prove that he’s still that guy that all of a sudden mistakes become an issue and the defense is thinking, ‘If we give up 21 we lose because our offense is constantly turning the ball over.’”

To Orlovsky’s point, Wilson’s play was likely a big stressor for the Broncos defense during his two-year stint with the team.
He threw 19 interceptions, took 100 sacks, had 29 batted passes and 33 turnover-worthy plays during that span, per Pro Football Focus, and Denver’s offense ranked 19th in scoring in 2023 (21 points per game) and last in 2022 (16.9 points per game).
Although Wilson did get better from his first year to his second with the Broncos (his completion percentage rose six points, his passer rating spiked by 14 points and he threw 10 more touchdowns and three fewer interceptions), he could have a short leash with Fields champing at the bit right behind him.
