Three takeaways from Panthers' win over Oilers in Game 3

The Florida Panthers topped the Edmonton Oilers, 4-3, in Game 3, taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Here are three takeaways from Thursday's action.

Sergei Bobrovsky continues to be the difference-maker

Bobrovsky gave up three or more goals for the first time since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals in a 5-4 loss to the New York Rangers. However, he was stellar again in net Thursday for the Panthers and arguably the most significant reason they're a win away from hoisting the Cup instead of holding a 2-1 advantage.

In Game 3, Bobrovsky made 32 saves and helped the Panthers kill off three Oilers power plays. Meanwhile, he kept Edmonton's stars quiet, stonewalling several high-percentage chances from Connor McDavid (five shots) and Leon Draisaitl (three shots), who finished the game goalless.

Bobrovsky has allowed only four goals over three games, turning away 82 of 86 Oilers' shots on goal.

Panthers took full advantage of Oilers' mistakes

The Panthers' style depends upon pouncing on opportunities and making them count to be successful. They did just that in Game 3, with all four of their goals coming off an Oilers miscue.

Sam Reinhart opened the scoring in the first period following a turnover in the Oilers' zone by Evan Bouchard. But the Panthers all but secured their victory after capitalizing on three Edmonton errors in the second period that swayed the game.

Over the final 10:48 of the second period, Vladimir Tarasenko, Sam Bennett and captain Aleksander Barkov scored, turning a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 Panthers advantage heading into the third. Tarasenko's goal came after Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner fumbled a puck behind his own net. Likewise, a turnover by Darnell Nurse led to Bennett's goal. Minutes later, a defensive breakdown by the Oilers resulted in Barkov burying a shot off a two-on-one, a goal that proved to be the difference in the 4-3 victory.

Oilers power play stays quiet

The Oilers owned the fourth-ranked power-play unit in the NHL during the regular season and were the best in the playoffs entering the Stanley Cup Final. However, the unit has gone quiet since running into the Panthers' hard-nosed defense and Bobrovsky.

Much like their offensive game as a whole, the Oilers earned quality attack time on the man advantage on Thursday but were unable to do anything with it. Edmonton finished 0-for-3 on the power play in Game 3 and managed only six total shots on net in the third.

After posting another goose egg, the Oilers are an astounding 0-for-10 on the power play for the series. Already down 3-0 to the Panthers, the hill is a tough one to climb for the Oilers, but they aren't doing themselves any favors by being unable to capitalize up a man.
