The Phillies, amid one of the best regular seasons in franchise history, turned the first triple play of 2024 on Monday and the 736th all-time, per SABR's triple play database.
The Angels (August 18, 2023) recorded the league's last triple play before Philadelphia's.
With runners on the corners, Tigers centerfielder Matt Vierling hit a sinker back to Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola, who caught the liner on the fly and threw the ball to first baseman Bryce Harper for the second out.
Harper tossed the ball across the diamond to third baseman Alec Bohm for the easy third out after Tigers shortstop Zach McKinstry mistakenly crossed home plate instead of retreating to his base.
According to data from SABR, it was the first 1-3-5 triple play since July 11, 1929, and only the third in MLB history.
The Phillies (51-26) have the league's best record by win percentage and are first in run differential (+114).
Earlier this season, they set a franchise record for best record through 50 games (38-12). Harper and Bohm, who were instrumental in Monday's triple play, were revealed earlier in the day as the two leading vote-getters in the NL for this year's All-Star Game.
