Shane van Gisbergen crashes out of Chicago Street Race

Shane van Gisbergen will not sweep the weekend at the Chicago Street Course.

van Gisbergen was running inside the top five on lap 24 when Chase Briscoe hit van Gisbergen, damaging both drivers' cars and knocking van Gisbergen out of the race for good.

The crash will officially place van Gisbergen 40th out of 40 cars on the results sheet.

"It's gutting," van Gisbergen said. "I felt like I was under control the whole race. On that restart, I looked behind me in (turn) 6 and saw him behind me. It took me by surprise."

van Gisbergen was then asked if there was anything he thought he could've done differently.

"Not looking at it now, no," van Gisbergen said. "As soon as you got out of the wheel tracks of the car in front of you, you could see," he said, referring to the water spray. "(Racing in the rain) was pretty easy, I thought."

"It's frustrating. We had a car good enough to win. I was driving within myself. Once I got to the lead, I felt like I couldn't pull away. Being the leader, you have to back off. You can't judge off the guy ahead. I felt like Ty Gibbs was really quick at the start, but every time it rained, he came back to the field."

van Gisbergen still remains a favorite to land a full-time Cup Series ride in 2025. His next Cup Series race this season will come at the road-course of Watkins Glen on Sept. 15. van Gisbergen also races full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and will take on the "Tricky Triangle" of Pocono Raceway on Saturday.

With the Grant Park 165 currently under a red flag, Ty Gibbs leads over Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson. The race sits on lap 25, with 50 laps remaining to be run when the heavy rain moves out.
