Mercury’s Sophie Cunningham, Brittney Griner to both compete in 2024 WNBA Skills Challenge
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

AT&T WNBA All-Star 2024 will feature the best of the best women’s basketball players in a showcase that will display just how talented and skilled the league is in a two-day, competitive extravaganza.

The Kia WNBA Skills Challenge, WNBA STARRY 3-Point Contest and an exhibition between the 2024 USA Basketball 3×3 Women’s National Team and the USA Basketball 3×3 U23 National Team will take place Friday before the WNBA All-Star Game commences on Saturday.

In the skills challenge in particular, it will see an array of different obstacles and goals that will put five players who will compete for the fastest time.

“The five contestants in the Kia WNBA Skills Challenge will compete in an obstacle course that tests a variety of basketball skills: dribbling, bounce pass, chest pass and outlet pass, in addition to shots including an elbow jumper and three-pointers from atop the arc and the corner,” a press release said. “Among the obstacles positioned along the course will be a 2025 Kia Sorento Turbo-Hybrid. The players will compete against one another to post the fastest time when running the course. The two players with the fastest times in the First Round will advance to the Final Round.”

While Allisha Gray (Atlanta Dream), Marina Mabrey (Connecticut Sun) and Erica Wheeler (Indiana Fever) are all going to see what they got in this skills course, two Phoenix Mercury are set to do the same and could end up going head-to-head against one another: Brittney Griner and Sophie Cunningham.

Representing the hometown Mercury who are hosting All-Star 2024, Griner will look to put on a star-studded performance as she is also on Team USA in the All-Star Game before heading to the Olympics in Paris. Since coming back from a toe fracture on her left foot and missing the first 10 games of the season, the 6-foot-9 center is going to play in her ninth All-Star Game as she is averaging 18.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

It will be interesting to see how quick Griner can complete this obstacle course considering it requires speed and 3-point shooting. Not known for being a high volume shooter from deep, she has been attempting more threes as of recently which could bode well in this event.

Going up against her Mercury teammate, Cunningham’s could be a favorite considering her all-around game makes her a perfect candidate for this kind of competition. Though she has come off the bench more times than starting, the Mizzou product has 8.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game across all 25 Mercury games so far this season. She is shooting at a 39.2% clip from three and isn’t afraid of being a playmaker, two skillsets that will be utilzed when chasing the quickest time.

The skills competition, 3-point contest and 3×3 exhibition will all be on Friday inside Footprint Center and will be broadcasted by ESPN starting at 6 p.m. PT.

WNBA relocation rumors heat up with reported Sun sale

The Connecticut Sun took a significant step toward relocation on Saturday. Per media reports, Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca reached an agreement to purchase the franchise for $325 million, potentially paving the way for the organization to shift its headquarters to Beantown as soon as the 2027 season. However, there could be roadblocks. Per The Athletic's Ben Pickman, a league spokesperson emphasized that other cities "have priority over Boston" in adding a WNBA franchise. "Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams," the spokesperson wrote. "As part of our most recent expansion process ... nine additional cities also applied for WNBA teams and ... currently have priority over Boston," the statement said. "No groups from Boston applied for a team at that time." On June 30, Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia were chosen as future WNBA homes. This season, the league added the Golden State Valkyries, and the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo will join in 2026. During the recent expansion decision, other cities, including Charlotte, Denver, Kansas City, Houston and Nashville, were among those to submit bids. Considering the proximity of Uncasville, Connecticut, to Boston (a less than two-hour drive), it might make more sense for the Sun to remain in the northeast than move operations elsewhere. The Sun already have a connection to the area. TD Garden, the home of the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins, hosted its first WNBA game last season when the Sun played the Los Angeles Sparks. Per the team's official website, the teams played a sold-out crowd of 19,156, which it noted was the largest crowd in franchise history. On July 15, TD Garden hosted a Sun-Indiana Fever game in front of another sellout. Afterward, Sun center Tina Charles said, "It was an amazing experience," later describing it as "a success." Based on the pending Sun sale, that might have been a trial run to a more sustained league presence in Boston. If so, the other cities that were in the running for an expansion franchise will lose their priority.

'Wild Card' Flashing for Packers Defense During Training Camp

Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is going to need to figure out how to put a rhetorical jigsaw puzzle together this season. At cornerback, the Packers have gone so far as to convert former wide receiver Bo Melton to cornerback in hopes of trying to replace former Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander, who was released this spring. The puzzle and potential combinations may be even more wide open at linebacker, as training camp continues and the 2025 regular season approaches. Isaiah Simmons Standing Out for Packers While it would seem that there is plenty of competition at linebacker, for Green Bay, heralded by some ascending young talent, one veteran is making his presence felt this summer. According to the Packers’ Mike Spofford, Isaiah Simmons has been standing out for the Packers, at linebacker, this summer. “Cooper and Walker are the only ones I’d say offer a lot to the pass rush,” Spofford writes for the team’s official website. “We’ll see about Simmons there. He’s the real wild card in this mix. What I like is the range of body types and strengths. McDuffie isn’t all that big or fast but knows the defense and diagnoses plays to put himself in the right spot. Hopper is a thumper. The other guys can attack, run and/or chase in any direction asked. It’s an intriguing bunch.” Simmons, 27, who spent the past two seasons playing safety for the New York Giants, adds not just a veteran presence but the versatility that comes with experience playing multiple positions to the Packers’ linebacking corps. How the Packers wind up using Simmons remains to be seen, but his physicality upfront alongside a player as dominant and talented as Cooper has the potential to be a significant upgrade for Green Bay in the season ahead.

Pittsburgh Steelers Stock Watch: Rookie UDFA is on pace to skyrocket up the WR depth chart through two weeks of training camp

The Steelers have managed to get through the dog days of training camp. With the first two weeks in the rearview, it's finally game week for the Steelers in 2025. But before we look ahead to the first exhibition of the season, let's take note of whose stock is rising on the Steelers' roster... Riser No. 1: Rookie UDFA WR Roc Taylor Roc Taylor has been one of the more consistent WRs throughout the entire unit. Honestly, between up and down days from Roman Wilson, and the injury to WR Calvin Austin III, Pittsburgh's most consistent wide receiver not named DK Metcalf, has been Roc Taylor. If there ever was a year where a UDFA WR makes the Steelers roster, it's 2025. There is a virtual unknown beyond CAIII and DK Metcalf. If Taylor's strong camp carries over to "in stadium" performances, as Mike Tomlin would call them in the preseason, he might be a shoe-in for the final 53. Riser No. 2: RB Jaylen Warren Jaylen Warren is clearly the incumbent at RB, but there has been, and still might be, a real shot that rookie Kaleb Johnson pushed him for that role. However, the rookie was indoctrinated to the Steelers' padded practice in camp last week. After losing his Backs on Backers reps to Malik Harrison, he fumbled the ball in a team period via a punch-out from DeShon Elliott. No fumbles alone will keep Warren as the clear starter, but when you add on that he was excellent in pass protection, it's clear that the vet has the leg up. Riser No. 3: TE Jonnu Smith After a slow start to camp with a day-to-day injury, the pads came on, and so did Jonnu Smith's game. He was dominant in one-on-ones, and he's made his fair share of plays in team settings despite running with the twos in 11 personnel or when only one tight end is on the field. The more weapons, the better. With Metcalf and Freiermuth solidified as the top two pass catchers, inserting Jonnu Smith into a flex role where he can be the tight end number two in 12 personnel or a slot WR in 11 personnel will get this offense going where it needs to be.

Lakers insider updates LeBron James' immediate future

LeBron James wasn't present at Luka Doncic's contract extension news conference. That doesn't necessarily mean anything, and he's more than entitled to some time off the clock just like everybody else. However, given all that has been said about his future with the Los Angeles Lakers, it didn't take long before people speculated whether there was something else going on. The Athletic's Dan Woike reports that there's nothing to it. "James has not asked for a trade or a contract buyout, team and league sources have said. He’ll turn 41 on Dec. 30," wrote Woike. James' agent and friend, Rich Paul, also made it loud and clear that he hasn't even talked about potentially leaving the Lakers, and while he still doesn't know if he'll re-sign with them or will continue to play beyond this season, that's a bridge they'll cross when they get there. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka also shut down rumors by pointing out that he's been in constant talks with James and his camp. “Yeah, so all the interactions we’ve had with LeBron and his camp, Rich (Paul) in particular, have been positive and supportive. So very professional and Rich has been great,” Pelinka said. “The dialogue with him has been open and constant.” The Lakers are doing the right thing by pivoting towards their younger star. Whether this will be the end of the line for James in Southern California remains to be seen.
