Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier gained leverage ahead of a pivotal 2025 season when 2026 ESPN 300 five-star recruit JaReylan McCoy committed to the program.
The defensive end is the highest-ranked recruit in Florida's surging 2026 class. Per On3, the Gators ranked outside the top 25 in its rankings two weeks ago but have since risen to No. 13.

McCoy is the No. 9 overall player in ESPN's high school prospect rankings and top Florida recruit. Per ESPN's Eli Lederman, the 6-foot-7, 260-pound edge chose Florida over SEC rivals LSU and Texas.
McCory originally committed to LSU in January 2025.
Napier scored another huge recruiting win this month with McCoy's decision to enroll at Florida.
On June 3, four-star safety Kaiden Hall committed, followed five days later by four-star wideout Justin Williams.

The Gators added another four-star wide receiver, Marquez Daniel, on Saturday.
Despite limited on-field success in three seasons as Gators head coach, Napier's strong recruiting class should give him extra job security ahead of the 2025 season.
In February, The Athletic's Seth Emerson ranked Napier No. 2 in his SEC coaching hot seat rankings.
Through his first three seasons at Florida (2022-24), Napier has a 19-19 record, including 1-1 in bowl games. He posted his first winning season last year, going 8-5 and leading the Gators to a Gasparilla Bowl win.
2024 five-star quarterback recruit D.J. Lagway had a promising freshman season, winning late-season home games against LSU and Ole Miss, eliminating both from the College Football Playoff conversation.
While expectations might be higher for the Gators, they could find it difficult to improve much from last season.
Per ESPN's Football Power Index, Florida has the country's toughest strength of schedule. It should begin the season 2-0 with games against FCS Long Island and South Florida, but a brutal stretch follows.
Florida plays LSU and Miami in back-to-back weeks on the road. Following a bye, it hosts Texas, then travels to Texas A&M. The Gators also play Georgia and Tennessee in The Swamp while getting Ole Miss on the road.
It's a daunting schedule with several land mines. Florida is unlikely to emerge unscathed, but Napier might.
With his recruiting success, the Gators would risk losing their talented prospects by firing Napier should Florida underwhelm this fall.
According to Reuters, Daniel, an Alabama native, explained his decision to commit to Florida by saying, "What makes Florida stand out to me are the coaching staff. Coach Napier is really a great coach."
McCoy also praised Napier and the coaching staff, crediting the "family atmosphere" as a major draw in his choice.
Florida isn't the power it once was, and it's unclear whether Napier is the right coach to return the program to glory. But with every high-profile recruit who commits to the Gators, the chances increase that he'll be around in 2026.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian made his opinion about the Longhorns' case for a College Football Playoff bid clear following No. 16 Texas's 27-17 win over No. 3 Texas A M on Friday. The Longhorns ended the regular season with a 9-3 record. Two of those losses came to a pair of top-five teams on the road in Ohio State and Georgia, while the other came on the road to a 3-8 Florida squad. Texas HC Steve Sarkisian makes his case "I think this — if you really look at the body of work and you look at the Southeastern Conference and what we have to go through every week, you look at the non-conference schedule we played to go to Ohio State in Week 1 and lose by seven when we outgained them by nearly 200 yards, we got a really good football team," Sarkisian told ABC's Molly McGrath. "It'd be a disservice to our sport if this team's not a playoff team when we went and scheduled that non-conference game. Because if we're a 10-2 team, it's not a question. But we were willing to go play that game. So, is that what college football's about? Don't play anybody and just have a good record, or play the best and put the best teams in the playoff, and we're one of the best teams." Texas will almost certainly need several of the teams above them in the CFP rankings to lose to have a shot at a playoff berth. Among them are No. 11 BYU (10-1), No. 12 Miami (9-2), No. 14 Vanderbilt (9-2) and No. 15 Michigan (9-2).
NFL legend Jason Kelce has made his opinion of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones very clear. To be more specific, the Philadelphia Eagles icon shared his brutally honest view on how Jones’ big move before the NFL trade deadline transformed the Cowboys into a much more formidable team. Kelce had a lot to say about Jones and the Cowboys on a recent episode of his “New Heights” podcast alongside his brother, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce. Jason Kelce praised Jones for bringing in Quinnen Williams in a blockbuster trade deal, but the legendary center is adamant that he will not be apologizing for his take on the Cowboys and their 83-year-old owner. For what it's worth, Jones had an outrageous claim himself recently. “New Heights” released a new episode on Wednesday, and as usual, the brothers discussed developments in the NFL. One of the topics they covered was that the Cowboys have gone undefeated since the trade deadline, when Jones pulled the trigger on a blockbuster deal with the New York Jets for All-Pro defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. However, when asked if he believes he owes Jones an apology, Kelce was confused. “Do we owe Jerry an apology? Who owes Jerry an apology? What do I have to apologize for?” Kelce asked. “They [expletive] sucked! What are we talking about? Their defense was horrendous. “So good job! What do we owe an apology for? Hey, your car doesn't work. Oh, I went and got it fixed. Oh, we owe you an apology for saying your car [expletive] broke down and didn't work on the side of the road? I don't owe [expletive] an apology.” The Cowboys have gone 3-0 since Williams’ arrival, including Sunday’s massive comeback victory against Jason's former team, the Eagles, and their Thanksgiving win over Travis' Chiefs. While Kelce has refused to apologize to Jones, he admitted that the Cowboys owner deserves praise for his decision to bring in an elite-caliber player in Williams. “We owe Jerry Jones a clap of approval,” Kelce said. “I'll say this, and I'll stand on this, and I think the guys will back me. When Jerry said we were gonna make a trade, I think everybody's expecting an edge player to replace Micah [Parsons]. When they said it was Quinnen, immediately, I thought this is better for that defense. “Because for years, they have lacked the raw, man strength, big power in the heart of that defense. They have lacked that type of presence, and Quinnen brings that. I just think for moving forward, this is a great piece to build around. I think it's a great move by Jerry. “I don't think I owe him a [expletive] apology, but I'll say great [expletive] job.”
The Boston Red Sox made their first major trade of the offseason earlier this week, and Richard Fitts was on the business end of the deal. Fitts started this season in the Red Sox rotation, but injuries and struggles both took a toll. He wound up with a 5.00 ERA in 45 innings, and briefly flirted with a move to the bullpen late in the year before elbow neuritis ended his year early. Now that he's been dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals as part of the package for three-time All-Star Sonny Gray, Fitts is looking forward to competing for a spot in a less experienced rotation. If you like our content, choose Sports Illustrated as a preferred source on Google. Fitts talks trade, Cardinals opportunity Fitts recently shared his mindset on the trade, admitting that he likely had a better chance to stick in the St. Louis rotation than he would have if he'd remained in Boston. “With this opportunity (with the Cardinals), if I am able to stay healthy, I think it’s just going to be a great fit and a way for me to stay in a rotation,” Fitts said, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. “I feel like I really grew as a pitcher with the Red Sox. "When I came over from the (New York) Yankees to the Red Sox, it was like, ‘Oh, this would be cool if I get to be a big leaguer over here.’ And now, moving to this opportunity, it’s like, ‘I am a big leaguer. How can I fit into (the Cardinals) rotation?’” Though he would have been buried on the depth chart a bit, the Red Sox definitely weren't happy to see Fitts go. He showed No. 4 starter promise during his September call-up a year ago, including a scoreless start against the Yankees, and he was a spring training darling this year, adding significant velocity and showcasing three breaking balls. While Gray gives the Red Sox a significantly higher floor than they had to start the week, the Red Sox know they incurred some long-term risks by moving on from Fitts and Brandon Clarke. But the beauty of building pitching depth over the past couple of years is that it allows them to take some risks.
The Minnesota Vikings are set to start rookie undrafted free agent Max Brosmer against the Seattle Seahawks, as starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy is out with a concussion. It's a tough one for the Vikings, who have dealt with quarterback injuries all season long, starting with McCarthy's high ankle sprain in Week 2, and Carson Wentz's brutal left shoulder injury suffered in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns. It's been that kind of season for the 4-7 Vikings, but arguably the most brutal aspect has been not knowing if McCarthy is the future at quarterback. With Sunday's game, the Vikings are going to get their first look at Brosmer, who has been compared by many to the elevation of Brock Purdy, including me back in August. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler takes damning shot at J.J. McCarthy The chance for Brosmer to emerge is a huge one, as the Vikings are starving for any kind of good quarterback play. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler broke down how both the Vikings and other teams feel about him "Max Brosmer, huge showcase for this guy. The Vikings know that they have something in Max Brosmer," said Fowler on Saturday morning's Sports Center. "They felt like he had a really good preseason. I talked to multiple teams who said he was cool and calm and collected in the preseason action. He's an undrafted free agent, so the expectations aren't overly high, but I'm told, just from a mental preparation standpoint, he's been really good, and they feel like, hey, maybe something can happen here." Fowler didn't stop there, comparing him to Purdy, who share very similar career arcs, with the sole difference being that Purdy was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, whereas Brosmer was one of the UDFAs with the most guaranteed money. "It was around three years to the day, Randy, that Brock Purdy made his debut week 12 of the 2022 season. He started for the 49ers. Rest is history. Now, he's one of the, you know, top 10 to 12 best quarterbacks in the league. That's a lot of expectation to put on this guy. However, you know, there is some symmetry here. Yeah, you have Kevin O'Connell's offense. They've got weapons." Fowler didn't end there, as the final line came in like a dagger in terms of McCarthy's performances this season. "They feel like, at the very least, he's going to be probably more mentally prepared than they've had this season with the struggles [at quarterback]." Calling Brosmer more mentally prepared than both McCarthy and Wentz is incredibly damning, and it could be why they decide to ride it out with Brosmer the rest of the season if things continue to go well. This isn't the first time that we've had negative words seemingly come out of the Vikings' building about this team, including McCarthy, this season, but this might be the worst of them all. Will Brosmer end up being the next guy for the Vikings? Only time will tell, but it certainly looks possible. window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-383').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-383').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*'); This story was originally published by A to Z Sports on Nov 29, 2025, where it first appeared in the NFL section.
