Olympic swimming recap: Multiple history-making moments on Day 3 in the pool

The Olympic swimming competition continued Monday and history was made multiple times in the pool. Let's get you caught up on all the action.

David Popovici made Olympic history winning Romania's first men's swimming gold medal in the 200 Freestyle. He just out-touched Great Britain's Matthew Richards by a mere two-hundredths of a second. Reno, Nevada, native Luke Hobson earned bronze for Team USA in what seemed like the tightest final of the swim competition so far.

Team USA's Ryan Murphy earned bronze in the men's 100 backstroke final, winning a medal in the event for the third consecutive Olympics. Italy's Thomas Ceccon won his country's first Olympic gold in the event after out-touching China's Xu Jiayu by three-tenths of a second.

Murphy will have the opportunity to become the first male athlete to win medals in both backstroke events over three consecutive Olympics when he takes on the 200-meter edition later this week.

South Africa's Tatjana Smith (formerly Schoenmaker) made an epic comeback in the final lap of the women's 100 Breaststroke to snag gold from China's Tang Qianting, who had a half-body-length lead at the 50-meter mark. Lily King barely missed out on the podium for Team USA, falling short by just a single hundredth of a second and tying for fourth. Ireland's Mona McSharry claimed the bronze.

Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan upset teammate Ariarne Titmus for gold in the women's 200 Freestyle, charging home in the final 25-meter to break the Olympic record with a time of 1:53.27.

Titmus was looking to make history by becoming the first swimmer, male or female, to sweep the 400 and 200 Freestyle events at two Olympics. Siobhan Haughey won Hong Kong's third Olympic swimming medal, snagging the bronze.

17-year-old Summer McIntosh won gold for Team Canada in the women's 400 Individual Medley in dominant fashion, finishing nearly six seconds ahead of her nearest challenger. American teammates Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant earned silver and bronze respectively. Weyant earned silver in the same event in Tokyo.

Team USA's Regan Smith and Australia's Kaylee McKeown will face off in the women's 100 backstroke final on Tuesday after solid semifinal races on Monday afternoon. Teammate Katharine Berghoff will join Smith in the final, as well as McKeown's teammate Iona Anderson, setting up another major USA-Australia showdown in the pool.
