SummerSlam is a major premium live event for WWE. Outside of WrestleMania and the Royal Rumble, it's among the year's biggest shows. On Saturday, a seven-match card produced four hours of elite entertainment. There was drama, heartbreak, moral victories and the return of a legend.
When speaking to the media as part of his post-event news conference, Paul "Triple H" Levesque confirmed that, moving forward, SummerSlam could become a two-night event, similar to WrestleMania.
"Who knows what the future brings," Levesque said. "...There was a lot of stuff we could have put into this ... It would have been eight hours, right? ... As we continue to grow, we'll take it, like I said, step by step. So is this the last SummerSlam you see that is just one night? I think so. But we will see where that goes long-term. I'm excited about that opportunity ... You can never say that 'this is what we do,' and that's it, we're locked in."

By the time the next SummerSlam rolls around, WWE will be on Netflix. The type of content it produces will likely be more mature. And, it will have significant financial backing to be more adventurous with its premium live event offerings.
Since making WrestleMania a two-night event, WWE has been able to make it the pivot point in its storytelling. New directions are set for the entire year, with stories unfolding, changing or even ending on the flagship event. Adding a second night of SummerSlam would provide a logical pivot point for the company. More airtime allows for more details and potential changes based on fan reaction.
WWE has been trending upward for over a year. It's in its hottest period since the "Attitude" era and show no signs of slowing down. Adding a second night for a major PLE could be smart business, especially if the fanbase's appetite continues to grow.
Fortunately, Levesque and the rest of the TKO board will have a year to figure out the final details before making a final decision. Nevertheless, an additional night of elite-level wrestling is never a bad thing, especially when it's as captivating as it was on Saturday.
