Watch: China upsets U.S. men's team, American women dominate in medley relays to close Paris swim program

The swim competition at the Paris Games concluded with some epic finishes in the final two events, the men's and women's 4x100 medley relays.

Team China pulled a wild upset over Team USA to win gold in the men's event, marking the first time the Americans have ever lost in the Olympic race.

China's Pan Zhanle posted the fastest 100 freestyle split in history with a time of 45.92 seconds, holding off American Hunter Armstrong in the anchor leg of the relay.

The Chinese team featured two swimmers embroiled in the 2021 doping controversy, which left some athletes doubtful about the level playing field entering the Paris Games.

The French relay, led by four-time gold medalist Leon Marchand, earned the bronze.

On the women's side, the American relay smashed the world record and earned gold in the event.

Gretchen Walsh swam the fastest butterfly split in history as Torri Huske closed out the victory well ahead of the next closest team, Australia, who won silver, while China won the bronze.

The relay victory sealed the overall win for the Americans against their rivals in Australia, topping the gold medal count eight to seven in the final event of the Games.
