We're now into the final week of the Paris Games. Here's the latest from Monday's action.
American Sam Kendricks won silver in the men's pole vault event Monday but it was the gold medalist, Sweden's Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, who had all eyes on him even after he had already secured first place. Duplantis still had three remaining attempts in his turn and he had the world record in sight. After two failed attempts, Duplantis successfully cleared the bar on his final vault at 6.25 meters or 20 feet, six inches tall.

In Tahiti, the surfing competition wrapped up Monday night with the medal matches but Brazil's Gabriel Medina, the prohibitive favorite in the men's competition, missed out on a chance at gold after he lost in the semifinals to Australia's Jack Robinson. Instead, Medina won the bronze medal and France's Kauli Vaast took gold. Caroline Marks won America's second surfing medal ever after defeating Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb for gold in the women's final.
On the track, American Noah Lyles, who won a dramatic gold medal in the 100-meter dash Sunday, easily qualified Monday for the men's 200m semifinals. Lyles is looking to pull off a double in the events for the first time since Carl Lewis did it in 1984. His teammates, Brittany Brown, Gabby Thomas and McKenzie Long also qualified for the women's 200m semifinals.
In beach volleyball Monday, Team USA's male duo of former NBA player Chase Budinger and Miles Evans lost to Norway in straight sets, eliminating them in the Round of 16. However, their counterparts Miles Partain and Andy Benesh advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Italy in straight sets. On the women's side, Americans Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth lost to Canada in their Round of 16 match.

Three big things about Team USA
1. Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles finish Olympic program with medals
The women's gymnastics program wrapped up Monday morning and Team USA earned two more medals. Simone Biles won silver and Jordan Chiles bronze in the floor routine apparatus. Chiles originally finished fifth but after an official inquiry over her routine's difficulty value, her score was changed by the judges and she wound up finishing third. Biles and teammate Suni Lee both fell during the balance beam apparatus, resulting in both missing the podium to conclude their Paris Games.

2. Women's 3x3 fails to defend Tokyo gold, wins bronze instead
After falling at the last moment of overtime 18-16 to Spain on Monday morning, the women's 3x3 basketball squad was forced into the third-place match — unable to defend their gold medal from the Tokyo Games. The American women would go on to defeat Canada 16-13 later Monday afternoon to win bronze. Hailey Van Lith led Team USA with six points.
3. Valarie Allman wins second-straight discus gold
American discus thrower Valarie Allman needed her final attempt of the competition to do it but she ultimately came away with her second-straight gold medal in the women's event. Allman, 29, also won gold at the Tokyo Games. China's Feng Bin and Croatia's Sandra Elkasevic earned silver and bronze respectively.
You won't believe this
Monday's women's 5000m race was filled with dramatics. Kenya's Beatrice Chebet won gold but the battle for silver and bronze extended beyond the finish line. Chebet's teammate Faith Kipyegon finished second but was initially disqualified after video review appeared to show she obstructed Ethiopian runner Gudaf Tsegay while exchanging some slight shoves earlier in the race. Therefore, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan — who originally finished third — won the silver and the fourth-place finisher, Italy's Nadia Battocleti, got bronze. But the drama wasn't finished there. The Kenyan delegation appealed the decision and Kipyegon's disqualification was overturned, returning the silver medal to her.
