Three takeaways from Team USA's gold-medal win over France

The United States has won the Olympic gold medal for men's basketball. They overcame France in a 98-87 thriller on Saturday, proving that they're still the best international team in the world and erasing memories of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Here are three takeaways from Team USA's latest win.

1. Mission complete

Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant are most likely playing in their last international tournament. The trio committed to competing in Paris toward the start of the regular season and proved that they're still among the best players in the world despite their advancing age.

Furthermore, Team USA came into the Olympics with a point to prove after finishing fourth in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Steve Kerr's team was undefeated throughout their run to the final and found ways to overcome a talented and driven French team.

2. LeBron James continues to wow

James is 39 years old. He will turn 40 during the 2024-2025 NBA season, which is his 22nd year in the league. In Paris, he reminded the world that he's still a force of nature and among the most talented players on the planet. James averaged 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game, shooting 66 percent from the field and 31 percent from the perimeter en route to his gold medal.

Against France, James dropped 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out 10 assists. He might not have the explosiveness that made him a force throughout his career, but he has certainly adapted his game to keep himself at an elite level. Team USA fans should savor his participation in the tournament, as the legendary forward may not be playing professionally for much longer.

3. Victor Wembanyama held his own

Victor Wembanyama had arguably his best game of the Olympics while playing against the USA. He found ways to crack open their defense, used his size well on the defensive end, and hit three of his eight attempts from the perimeter. Playing in his first Olympics tournament, Wembanyama handled the expectations on his shoulders well, performing at a high level and showcasing the skillset that has him labeled as an All-Star of the future.

Now, with a silver medal to his name, Wembanyama will undoubtedly look to continue developing his game ahead of his sophomore season in the NBA. He's already shown what he can do as a young and raw talent. It's scary to imagine how good he'll be by the time the 2028 Olympics rolls around.
