Before quarterback Jared Goff found a long-term home with the Detroit Lions, well-respected Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay decided after the 2020 season he needed an upgrade over Goff at the sport's most important position.
During a recent conversation with NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Goff mentioned that the "emotional IQ" possessed by Detroit head coach Dan Campbell is "the best I’ve ever been around" in the league.
"All of our coaching staff will watch him in front of the room — he knows exactly when to push, exactly when to pull," Goff said about Campbell. "Even sometimes when you’re like, 'Man, is that the right thing?' A week later, you’re like, 'Man I’m glad he did that.' He can see ahead better than a lot of guys. I’ve had many moments the last three years where he’s asked for more from me. I appreciate that."
Campbell attracted some criticism due to the unique comments he offered during his introductory news conference back in January 2021, and the Lions then finished what was his and Goff's first campaign with the organization at 3-13-1. More recently, though, the two guided Detroit to wins across 20 of its last 27 regular-season contests and to the NFC Championship Game this past January.
"He’ll love me up when I do the right thing and make me feel good," Goff added about his relationship with Campbell. "I know he does all of that for everybody. He has such a great feel for who needs what, and I would say that’s coaching staff, that’s players, all the way, top to bottom. He’s a very special kind of human, and I don’t think you can teach that."
This past spring, Goff put pen to paper on a four-year contract extension that reportedly included $170M guaranteed, could be worth up to $212M and carries with it an expectation that he'll help the Lions do more than complete a journey back to the postseason this coming winter.
As of early Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Detroit second among the betting favorites at +550 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIX.
Goff sounds confident Campbell is the right man to ensure the 2024 Lions are as good, if not better, than advertised through and beyond Week 18.
