White Sox end their season-long case of the Mondays with historic win vs. Yankees

The White Sox are still trying to avoid infamy as the worst team in MLB history.

During Monday's 12-2 rout of the New York Yankees, however, everything went right for Chicago.

Per MLB.com's Scott Merkin, the White Sox entered the contest as the only MLB team with a winless day (Monday) for the 2024 season.

Among the flurry of factoids that made the victory even more stunning was how much Yankees starter Luis Gil dominated Chicago just three months ago. The 26-year-old tossed a six-inning gem against the White Sox in a 6-1 New York victory on May 18, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts.

He tied for his second-shortest outing of the year on Monday (four innings), tied for his second-highest number of hits allowed (seven) and allowed four runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

The White Sox had not only lost three in a row entering Monday but an almost unfathomable 24 of their last 25. For one night, they were propelled by their season-high 12 runs and 18 hits.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, as reported by the Associated Press and ESPN, Monday was the first time in 90 years that a team with the worst record beat the team with the best record (the Yankees entered action tied with the Baltimore Orioles) by 10-plus runs in July or later. Ironically, the last time that occurred was when Chicago shut out the Detroit Tigers 11-0 on Sept. 27, 1934.
