The Minnesota Vikings can't seem to avoid the injury bug.
On Wednesday, the Vikings confirmed rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the season following meniscus surgery. Hours later, second-year wide receiver Jordan Addison hobbled off the field after trying to make a contested catch in a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns and left on cart, via The Athletic's Alec Lewis.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Addison suffered an ankle injury but didn't seem alarmed.
"We'll make sure we go through the processes and get some pictures of knowing exactly what it really is," O'Connell said, via Tom Withers of the Associated Press. "But I think he's going to be all right. You hate to see that, especially early in practice like it was."
On Thursday, O'Connell provided an update, according to Field Level Media (h/t ESPN): "I don't see him missing any extended time."
The Vikings couldn't afford another severe injury to a star player, especially one that would hinder their passing attack. Per ESPN's Kevin Seifert, Minnesota tight end T.J. Hockenson is still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee and could start the season on injured reserve.
Addison is set to serve as the team's No. 2 WR behind three-time Pro Bowler Justin Jefferson. The 22-year-old showed promise as a rookie, recording 70 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdown catches in 17 games.
Addison should be a valuable weapon for Vikings QB Sam Darnold, who was battling with McCarthy for the starting job before the rookie suffered the injury.
