Arch Manning's backup role could evolve into leading position for Texas offense

Davey O'Brien preseason watchlist passer Ewers possesses all the traits of an elite quarterback — arm strength, polished footwork and grit — but staying healthy has been a hurdle. Since taking over as the starter, he has struggled to remain injury-free for an entire season, potentially opening the door for Manning.

Should Ewers face another injury this season, Manning could be called upon to take the reins. His performance in that scenario could present a challenge for Sarkisian. A successful offense relies heavily on the consistency of its quarterback, and if Manning steps in and excels, he could create a genuine dilemma for the coaching staff.

In the past, when Ewers was sidelined, former Texas quarterbacks Murphy and Hudson Card didn’t do enough to contest his starting role. However, if Manning were to outperform Ewers during an absence, it could strengthen his case for the starting position.

Sarkisian has consistently praised Manning’s efforts this offseason. After an impressive showing in the spring game, Manning seems poised to become the next star for the Longhorns.

While no one wishes for an injury to create an opportunity, it's part of the game, and Manning could benefit from it sooner rather than later.
