Former first-round WR could be just the addition Bills need

It’s been over a year since wide receiver Corey Davis last played a down in the NFL, but that isn’t deterring the Buffalo Bills from bringing in the former first-round pick for a workout.

Davis, who last played for the New York Jets in 2020, applied for reinstatement to the NFL in March after sitting out the 2023 season in what many believed to be an official retirement.

However, the 29-year-old wideout, who’s since been released by the Jets, is making a comeback, and he could land back in the AFC East with a Bills team searching for WR reinforcements after losing their top two receivers, Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis, this offseason.

Buffalo could use all the help they can. The team placed Chase Claypool on injured reserve, and it has no clear-cut No. 1 option for quarterback Josh Allen. 

The WR depth chart is littered with No. 2/No. 3 options in Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, plus rookie Keon Coleman, who could develop into a No. 1 but will likely have his share of growing pains in his first season.

In his six-year career, Davis has never topped 1,000 yards receiving (although he came close to 984 yards in 2020 with the Tennessee Titans) nor had more than 65 receptions in a single season, but he is a dependable veteran presence.

Davis finished the 2022 season with 32 receptions on 64 targets for 536 yards and two touchdowns, and he could give Buffalo a solid 1A-1B situation with either Coleman or Shakir.
