San Diego Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar is having a career year, one that earned him a spot in the starting lineup for the 2024 National League All-Star team. He is also in the middle of a historic stretch of games for a very painful reason.
He keeps getting hit by pitches.
A lot of pitches.
Entering play on Saturday night, Profar has been hit by eight pitches over the previous 10 games, a mark that no major league player has matched since the 1909 season.
Here is every pitch that has hit him during that stretch.
According to @OptaSTATS, no MLB player since 1909 has been hit more often in any 10-game span than Jurickson Profar has been hit in his last 10 games (8 times!) pic.twitter.com/qaFKZE4XmD

One of those pitches, in a game against the Pirates, hit Profar squarely in the leg and immediately dropped him to the ground, forcing him to exit the game. It looked like it was going to be a potentially serious injury, but he was able to return. The barrage of hit-by-pitches continued, though.
This stretch has resulted in him getting hit by a league-leading 15 pitches on the season as of Saturday.
Prior to the current campaign, Profar had never shown a tendency to getting plunked. Entering this season, he had been hit just once every 73 plate appearances (49 times in 3,623 plate appearances). This season he is getting hit once every 33 plate appearances.
