The Philadelphia Eagles' collapse late last season is considered one of the biggest head-coaching blunders in recent memory.
After starting 10-1, the Eagles lost five of their last six regular-season games before getting boat-raced by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Super Wild Card Weekend and prompting many Philly fans to start petitioning for change.
Despite the embarrassing way the season ended, head coach Nick Sirianni kept his job. Like many, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes Sirianni is coaching for his job in 2024, and he said as much during a recent episode of “First Take.”
“Make no mistake, (Nick Sirianni) you’re on the clock,” Smith said. “We’re watching you because if you look at the Eagles, they’re loaded. Offensively, how much more do you need? You have one of the best offensive lines in football, you have one of the best, most elusive backs in football in Saquon Barkley, you’ve got one of the top two wide-receiving tandems in the National Football League in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, and you’ve got a big-time tight end. … What don’t you have, if you really look at it, offensively?”
Although Sirianni’s job was safe, it seems he was put on notice by the Eagles front office after speculation ran rampant that he rubbed some of his players the wrong way and there was division between himself and the locker room.

He overhauled his assistant coaching staff during the offseason. Gone are former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai.
They were replaced by Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio, respectively, and the team added several new pieces to keep its championship window open including Barkley, receiver Jahan Dotson, offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, linebacker Devin White, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.
With the roster tweaking Philly did, many media pundits are picking the Eagles to compete for the NFC East with the Dallas Cowboys and to possibly make a run at another Super Bowl appearance this season.
“The fact of the matter is, you have the requisite weapons, and even last year, with Jalen Hurts as you quarterback and the weapons that you had, nobody expected y’all to nosedive the way that you did,” Smith added. “So I don’t want to see him acting like everything is…good. No, you ain’t; you got to show up.”
