The host Philadelphia Phillies and visiting Tampa Bay Rays took part in a bench-clearing brawl during the bottom of the eighth inning of the host's 9-4 victory on Tuesday.
The brouhaha was kick-started when Rays reliever Edwin Uceta nailed Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos in the hip with a fastball.
While Uceta claimed that there was no intent behind the plunking and that he threw a changeup, Castellanos wasn't buying it, saying that he "had an overwhelming sense that (he) was about to get drilled." He also hilariously compared the right-hander's behavior to something his toddler would do.
"We all just got a sense of what it was — he was just (ticked) off that he got hit around and his ERA shot through the roof," Castellanos said, according to an Associated Press and ESPN report. "You're frustrated and you're going to throw at somebody. ... That's like my 2-year-old throwing a fit because I took away his dessert before he was finished."
Tampa Bay's hurler was ejected after the incident. Per the report, MLB's Statcast showed that the pitch was a 96-mph sinker, not a changeup.
Uceta allowed a tie-breaking two-run double to pinch-hitter Cal Stevenson, then an RBI single to Buddy Kennedy and a two-run home run to Trea Turner. Bryce Harper then followed with a double, leading to Castellanos' hit by pitch.
The 26-year-old Rays pitcher entered the contest with a 0.79 ERA but left with a 1.49 mark.
Harper, who strolled toward the mound from second base, shouting at Uceta after his teammate was hit, also called out the Tampa Bay fourth-year pro.
"That's not the game that we play, man," Harper said, according to the report. "It shouldn't be. Guys throw too hard nowadays. You're getting mad because a guy hits a homer off you or you blow the lead, walk the guy and come out of the game."
