Tyreek Hill says he could have handled incident with Miami-Dade police differently

It’s safe to assume this is not how Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill envisioned the first week of the NFL season playing out.

Sure, the star wideout had an excellent performance in Sunday’s 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars (seven receptions, 130 yards, one touchdown), but he’s also seemingly spent a lot of time addressing the incident that happened before the game when Miami-Dade police detained him.

Now that Hill has had a few days to reflect on what transpired, he admitted to reporters on Wednesday that he could have handled things differently in the moment.

“I will say I could have [handled the situation] better,” Hill said. “I could have let down my window in that instant. The thing about me is that I don't want attention, I don't want to be like cameras out, phones on you in that moment. But at the end of the day, I'm human I got to follow rules, I got to do what everyone else would do. Now, does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out of me? Absolutely not, but at the end of the day I wish I could go back and do things a bit differently.”

The police department released body cam footage from the incident.

One officer advised Hill to keep his window down during the stop or he would be removed from the vehicle. The officer then told him to get out of the car while another officer shouted he was going to break Hill’s window.

The second officer opened the door, grabbed Hill by the arm and neck, dragged him out of the vehicle and brought him to the ground as he swore at Hill and placed him in handcuffs.

Hill was ultimately released with citations for careless driving and a seatbelt violation, however, he’s made it clear the officer who removed him from his car, Danny Torres, should lose his job.

“He’s got to go, man,” Hill said. “Not only did he treat me bad, he also treated my teammates with disrespect, he had some crazy words toward them and they didn’t even do nothing. … He’s got to go.”
