Jerry Jones serves as both the owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys and, thus, understandably is receiving quite a bit of criticism among fans after his club suffered back-to-back losses to fall to 1-2 on the season.
During a Tuesday appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan, Jones acknowledged that it's "very fair" to blame him for the current state of the franchise.
"It's well known that no decision is ultimately made here for what I either have acquiesced [to] or approved it," Jones explained, as shared by Todd Archer of ESPN. "...How could you think otherwise, whether it be who's out there coaching, whether it be who's out there playing, whether it be the stadium you're walking into? Whatever it is here, that's the way it is."
Jones' Cowboys looked like world beaters when they earned an impressive 33-17 season-opening win at the Cleveland Browns back on Sept. 8. Dallas then suffered a brutal 44-19 home loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, and the Baltimore Ravens notched a 28-25 victory at AT&T Stadium this past Sunday.
According to ESPN stats, the Cowboys are responsible for the NFL's worst run defense (surrendering 185.7 rushing yards per game) and the league's third-worst rushing attack (gaining 73.7 yards on the ground per contest). For a piece published Tuesday, ESPN's Ben Solak noted that "the Cowboys don't have anyone who can get open" among tight end Jake Ferguson and wide receivers CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert and Brandin Cooks.
"Lamb's average separation of 2.7 yards is the 11th-worst figure in the NFL (looking at wideouts and tight ends who have run at least 50 routes)," Solak added, "and Cooks is one of the 10 guys who's worse."
Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Cowboys star pass-rusher Micah Parsons said on the latest edition of his podcast that the club's defense is "going to get better" playing under first-year Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Jones echoed Parsons' take on Tuesday.
"I think we have a chance to improve on this, and that's the big thing," Jones said. "We're not hitting on all cylinders. If we were, that'd be real concerning."
As of Tuesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Cowboys as 4.5-point favorites for the upcoming "Thursday Night Football" matchup at the 1-2 New York Giants. Archer mentioned in a different article how the Cowboys have won 12 straight games with Dak Prescott featuring as Dallas' starting quarterback against the Giants.
If Prescott and Co. lose at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night, Jones may not wait until January to call Bill Belichick about possibly replacing head coach Mike McCarthy.
