Is 49ers' reign of dominance over the NFC coming to an end?

The San Francisco 49ers have been a powerhouse in the NFC. Yet, with two consecutive losses early in the season, questions about their dominance are inevitable. The 49ers currently sit at 1-2 in the NFC West, sparking discussion among fans and analysts. Is this just a rough patch, or are the tides changing within the conference?

San Francisco suffered through a rough stretch last season, where it lost three in a row between Weeks 6-8. It lost games to Cleveland, Minnesota and Cincinnati. However, this losing streak came after it had begun the year winning its first five games of the season. But the Niners were able to get back on track and come within one or two plays of winning the franchise's sixth Super Bowl.

What’s happening with the 49ers?

Looking at the Niners’ two losses to the Vikings and Los Angeles Rams, it seems to be a matter of executing late-game situations rather than getting completely run off the field. San Francisco had a 21-14 lead against the Rams entering the fourth quarter and was outscored 13-3 to close out the game, losing 27-24.

Against the Vikings in Week 2, the 49ers played catch up, losing 23-17 in the end. Playing in Minnesota has been a pain for the Niners, dating back to the 1990s. San Francisco hasn’t won in Minnesota since 1992. Steve Young was finally starting in San Francisco and would go on to win league MVP honors that year. But that’s how tough it’s been for the 49ers against the Vikings in Minnesota for three decades.

These recent setbacks are more than just numbers on a scoreboard. Team morale can be fragile in times of adversity, and losing streaks often test it. Injuries never help morale, and the Niners are already dealing with their fair share. Christian McCaffrey is on injured reserve and headed to Germany to meet with a specialist about his Achilles.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with back soreness, which flared against the Rams. Javon Hargrave suffered a partially torn right triceps, and that’s an injury that could potentially be season-ending. George Kittle missed the Rams game with a hamstring injury but could be back on the field in Week 4, along with Charvarius Ward, who’s also been dealing with a hamstring and knee issue. Deebo Samuel has been dealing with a calf injury that kept him out of the Rams game, too.

NFC state of mind

Even with all these early setbacks, it’s hard to count the Niners out completely based on the past few years. This team has played in four NFC title games since 2019, winning two. It doesn’t matter who the QB has been, Kyle Shanahan’s squad has been the dominant and recurring force in the NFC playoff picture. We often talk about who the real contenders are; well, the Niners have been in four of the last five NFL campaigns.

Knowing how this team has been built by general manager John Lynch and Shanahan, it’s hard to see it folding up shop following a couple of losses early in the season. Once they’re able to get their key guys healthy and refocused on both sides of the ball, there’s no good reason not to expect the 49ers to be in the mix once again entering January.
