Watch: Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott take part in spirited battle for stage win in Miami

If you wanted to know how much a stage win means in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, one look at Sunday's Straight Talk 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway tells you all you need to know.

Ryan Blaney originally cycled to the race lead after a round of green flag pit stops early in the stage, but Chase Elliott was able to get around the defending champion to take the top spot for himself.

Soon after, Denny Hamlin - who pitted later than both Blaney and Elliott and had fresher tires - got around Blaney for second, setting his sights on the leader.

Neither driver has had the most impressive playoff runs, and stage wins have been hard to come by for each. Elliott's only stage win of the season came in the season-opening Daytona 500, while Hamlin hadn't won a stage since the Brickyard 400 on July 21.

After catching Elliott, Hamlin played a spirited game of cat and mouse with the 2020 champion, as both drivers moved around the racetrack in search of grip.

Eventually Hamlin was able to get side-by-side with Elliott, and on lap 161, Hamlin completed the pass, taking the lead away from NASCAR's most popular driver.

Hamlin went on to win the stage, with Elliott holding off Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell for second-place. The stage win is Hamlin's first in over three months of competition, and gives him 10 crucial points as he looks to advance to the Championship Four for the fifth time in his career.

Astros Facing Jose Altuve Decision After Yordan Alvarez Update

The Houston Astros (72–58) are on pace to make the postseason for the ninth consecutive season, entering Sunday with a three-game lead in the AL West. A huge reason for the team’s success has once again been the face of the franchise, Jose Altuve. The 35-year-old veteran has been a driving force in the offense, posting a .278 batting average, .341 on-base percentage, .801 OPS, 22 home runs, and 64 RBIs across 126 games. His durability has been crucial for an Astros team that’s dealt with injuries to several key players—most notably left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez, who’s been sidelined since May 2 with a fractured right hand. Yordan Alvarez Could Rejoin Astros During Upcoming Homestand On Sunday, an update surfaced on Alvarez’s potential return after he began his rehab assignment earlier this week. Manager Joe Espada announced that Alvarez could rejoin the big-league roster during the team’s upcoming homestand beginning Tuesday. "Presuming Yordan Alvarez comes out of today’s Double-A game feeling good, there is a “strong possibility” he rejoins the Astros during their homestand that starts on Tuesday, Joe Espada said," wrote The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Alvarez’s Return Creates Lineup Dilemma for Joe Espada This comes at a pivotal time for Houston, as they prepare for a playoff push and look to reinsert one of the most feared hitters in the league. Alvarez, a three-time All-Star, has gone 5-for-8 with three doubles and two walks in his first two rehab games for Double-A Corpus Christi. However, with Altuve primarily handling DH duties in Alvarez’s absence, Espada will need to decide who returns to the field full-time. Alvarez was already a defensive liability before the injury, making it unlikely he’ll see regular starts in left field. That would force Altuve back to second base full-time, which could be taxing on the aging veteran and potentially impact his offensive production. It would also push trade deadline acquisition Ramon Urias out of his current infield role, creating a ripple effect across the lineup. Alvarez’s return will undoubtedly inject power back into the Astros’ offense, but it also presents a challenge for Espada as he balances health, defense, and lineup continuity heading into October.

Recent roster moves cement 2022 QB class as one of worst ever

Finding a starting quarterback in the NFL is hard work, and most players who get picked at the position will not pan out as hoped. Teams that took quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft have found that out first hand, and some recent roster moves around the league have helped to cement that class as one of the worst ever for quarterbacks. Of the nine quarterbacks taken in that class, only one of them — Brock Purdy with the San Francisco 49ers — is a starter in the NFL, and he is the only one out of that group who is still with the team that selected them. Here is a quick run down of where the first eight quarterbacks in that class are right now, including some recent roster moves featuring the top-two quarterbacks — Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder — taken in that class. Kenny Pickett (No. 20 overall, Pittsburgh Steelers) Pickett was just traded by the Cleveland Browns to the Las Vegas Raiders and is now already on his fourth team in the NFL, having been traded three times. He has a Super Bowl ring and should have a nice career as a backup, but as the first quarterback taken in a class, this is a disappointing career path so far. Desmond Ridder (No. 74 overall, Atlanta Falcons) Like Pickett, Ridder has also already played for four teams in the NFL and will have to join a fifth to continue his career after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. He was originally picked by the Atlanta Falcons and has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Raiders and Bengals. Malik Willis (No. 86 overall, Tennessee Titans) After failing to secure the starting job with the Titans, Willis is now a backup with the Green Bay Packers. Matt Corral (No. 94 overall, Carolina Panthers) Corral never threw a pass in the NFL and is no longer in the league, having most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. Bailey Zappe (No. 137 overall, New England Patriots) Zappe had a brief run as a starter with the Patriots, but he never solidified the job and has spent time as a backup with the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs. Sam Howell (No. 144 overall, Washington Commanders) Howell showed some potential as a starter for Washington during the 2023 season, throwing for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns. The downside: He also threw a league-leading 21 interceptions. After being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles this preseason, he is now on his third team. Chris Oladokun (No. 241 overall, Pittsburgh Steelers) Oladokun was the second of the Steelers' two quarterback picks in this class and never even made the roster. He was cut after the initial training camp and ended up as a depth piece in Kansas City. Skylar Thompson (No. 247 overall, Miami Dolphins) Thompson was forced into a starting role for a playoff game for the Dolphins but never really established himself as a long-term option. He was in training camp with the Steelers this season and played well, but is likely to lose out on a numbers game and be seeking a third team. Of these eight quarterbacks, four have already played for at least three teams before the end of their rookie contracts. Purdy, who was oddly enough the last quarterback taken in this class, is the only one who has found success. But even he is not good enough to salvage what has been a complete dud of a quarterback class.

The 'Most catches by an NFL rookie' quiz

10 years ago, the Raiders drafted Amari Cooper out of Alabama with the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft. Now, at 31 years old, the veteran is rejoining the organization in Las Vegas. The Raiders signed Cooper amidst reports of Jakobi Meyers requesting a trade. Cooper played his first 3+ seasons with the Raiders while they were still in Oakland before getting traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. During his first stint in Silver and Black Cooper averaged 61.2 receiving yards-per-game with 19 touchdowns in 52 contests. While Cooper’s 1,000-yard season days are likely done, he brings valuable experience to an otherwise fairly unproven wide receiver corps. Which brings us to today’s quiz. Cooper was an instant impact player when he was drafted by the Raiders, catching 72 passes for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie. With that being said, can you name the NFL players with at least 70 catches in their rookie campaign? Good luck! Did you like this quiz? Are there any quizzes you’d like to see us make in the future? Atlanta Falcons Surprisingly Cut Backup Quarterback

Atlanta Falcons Surprisingly Cut Backup Quarterback

The Atlanta Falcons have until 4:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday to trim their roster down to 53 players. In the effort to shave down the roster, they made a surprising move. Third-string quarterback Easton Stick has been released, per NFL insider Ian Rapaport via X. Stick started in all three of Atlanta’s preseason games in 2025. He played his best game in week one of the preseason, against the Detroit Lions, going 15 of 18 (83.3%) with 149 passing yards and a touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Blair. Stick had signed a one-year $1,337,500 contract with a $167,500 signing bonus and $567,000 guaranteed, per Spotrac. So the Falcons will be eating Stick’s guaranteed money in dead cap. They’re now down to three quarterbacks. They had three last year, but they moved on from Taylor Heinicke around the same time. It’s possible that they tried to find a deal and couldn’t. Atlanta began their first wave of cuts on Saturday, releasing 12 players, the most notable of which was recently signed defensive lineman Morgan Fox. The Falcons kicked off cut day by releasing undrafted free agent cornerback Cobee Bryant. Quarterback four, Emory Jones, suffered a concussion during Atlanta’s second preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. The Falcons signed Ben DiNucci and waived Jones prior to the final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. DiNucci played just two drives against the Cowboys and was one of Atlanta’s preliminary roster cuts on Saturday. Now with the release of Stick, the Falcons have just two quarterbacks on their roster: Michael Penix Jr and Kirk Cousins. Atlanta could bring back Jones to be their third and final quarterback once he is back from injury. However, Stick has outplayed Jones in both camp and during the preseason. Jones had just 65 passing yards during his two preseason games. Jones was listed behind Stick in all three of Atlanta’s preseason depth charts. It would be unusual for the team to pick Jones over Stick. Most likely, the Falcons will turn to other quarterbacks who were cut and are now on the market to fill their new quarterback three spot. Players such as Mike White, Tyler Huntley, Hendon Hooker and Kyle Trask could fit this role for Atlanta. More From Atlanta Falcons on SI
