After injury, should Packers have played Christian Watson vs. Bears?

With a trip to the postseason already locked up, did the Green Bay Packers make the right move by inserting wide receiver Christian Watson into the lineup on Sunday against the Chicago Bears?

Watson, coming off a knee injury that saw him miss Green Bay's Week 17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, was questionable heading into Sunday's regular-season finale at Lambeau Field. However, he was activated before the game against the Bears as the Packers tried to earn the sixth seed in the National Football Conference playoff bracket.

The day, however, was short-lived for Watson as he went down in the second quarter on a non-contact play.

After a trip inside the blue tent on the Packers' sideline, Watson was taken to the locker room. The look on his face told Green Bay fans all they needed to know about the injury and the frustration surrounding it.

Watson was officially listed as questionable to return after being taken off the field.

A second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Watson entered the game with 52 catches for 620 yards and two touchdowns on the campaign. In an inconsistent season, Watson has just two games with more than 100 yards receiving on the season, including a season-high 150 yards on the road against the Bears on Nov. 17.

Injuries are nothing new for Watson, as he missed the beginning and end of the 2023 season with hamstring issues, a problem that also kept him out of two games during his rookie campaign.

Knowing Watson's injury history, was the risk worth him coming back and playing in Week 18? While the Packers are trying to secure the sixth seed and avoid slipping to seventh and having to go on the road and face the Philadelphia Eagles, the risk of him taking the field against Chicago and potentially not being available for next week's wild-card game will certainly be something head coach Matt LaFleur will have to answer to on Sunday.

If Watson does indeed miss the wild-card matchup, Green Bay's receiver depth will take a sizable hit in a game where the Packers will need their offense clicking on the road in order to advance.
