The New York Mets are expected to reunite with first baseman Pete Alonso. However, they are reportedly running out of patience with negotiations.
Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Wednesday that the Mets want a decision from Alonso soon on a prospective deal. Sherman and Heyman noted that while progress has been made on the structure of a deal, a significant financial gap remains.
Alonso had reportedly offered the Mets a three-year deal with opt-outs in an attempt to bridge the gap. The three-year deal and at least one opt-out would remain in place during on-going discussions.
The Mets have begun to explore other options. They have reportedly checked in with the Blue Jays regarding first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero and the Blue Jays are also embroiled in their own differences as they attempt to hammer out an extension. The Toronto first baseman has given a deadline of the start of spring training for a deal to be in place.
The Mets have other holes in the roster that need to be addressed. The bullpen is a particular area of need — while closer Edwin Diaz is among the best in the majors, there are few other proven options ahead of him. Adding a reliever such as Tanner Scott would make a difference. Likewise, there are questions at second base and center field, where Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor are respectively atop the depth chart.
Potential fits will not remain on the market forever as the Mets wait for Alonso. The first base market is also drying up with fewer potential landing spots for the All-Star slugger. The Mets and Alonso remain a perfect match but time is running out.
