Alex Ovechkin broke another NHL record Thursday night against the Ottawa Senators. It wasn't the all-time goals record he's been chasing for several seasons but it's an impressive mark nonetheless.
The Washington Capitals captain scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Ottawa to give his team a 1-0 victory, ripping the puck past young goaltender Leevi Merilainen on a two-on-one breakaway.

Merilainen became the 179th different goalie Ovechkin has scored on in his 20-year career, the most in league history.
The game-winning tally Thursday night helped "The Great Eight" break a tie with the legendary Jaromir Jagr for the record (178).

The historic marker was Ovechkin's 21st of the season, increasing his career total to 874. He's now just 21 shy of passing Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky's all-time record (894).
It was also his 27th career overtime game-winning goal, the most in league history with the next closest player sitting at 22 (Sidney Crosby).
Ovechkin's 21 goals in 29 games played (16 missed for injury) has him at a 0.72 goals-per-game pace which means he's on schedule to break Gretzky's record before the end of the season.
After that, the Russian star still has one more year under contract in Washington which could likely serve as one of the most historic farewell tours in league history.
