By all accounts, the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy are eager to close a deal sooner rather than later.
In a piece published on Tuesday, ESPN's Nick Wagoner discussed how the extensions that Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa received ahead of the 2024 campaign could serve as starting points for negotiations between the 49ers and Purdy's camp.
"Goff landed a four-year deal worth up to $212M with $113.6M fully guaranteed in May ($53M average) and Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4M deal with $93.17M fully guaranteed in July ($53.1M average). Tagovailoa and Goff rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the NFL in terms of annual average value," Wagoner explained. "Given his production in his first three seasons, Purdy has a strong case to get something in that range, perhaps with more fully guaranteed money."
While Goff emerged as a regular-season Most Valuable Player Award candidate this past fall, he has yet to guide the Lions to a Super Bowl appearance. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa possesses a career record of 0-1 as a postseason starter.
To compare, Purdy has played in two NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl since the 49ers selected him as the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. Despite that, some have pointed out that he couldn't help the 2024 Niners overcome an injury crisis and earn a playoff berth, showing that he deserves the "game manager" label.
According to Pro Football Reference, Purdy ended this past regular season ranked seventh in the NFL among qualified players with a 67.9 adjusted QBR and 13th with a 96.1 passer rating. Across 15 games, he tossed 20 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions.
Wagoner noted that Purdy "has plenty of support from his 49ers teammates," such as tight end George Kittle. Kittle and others in the locker room understand Purdy was one fourth-down defensive stop away from becoming a Super Bowl champion last February, and they also likely realize the 25-year-old could become more expensive for the 49ers if he enjoys a career season while in the final year of his rookie contract.
However, if the two sides don't reach an agreement before the new league year opens in March, some fans may wonder if 49ers general manager John Lynch is serious about giving Purdy the money this offseason.
