Shaquille O'Neal is right about Jimmy Butler's fit with the Warriors

Jimmy Butler's future remains a hot topic around the NBA. The veteran forward has returned to the Miami Heat's rotation but is still expected to be shopped ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.

If recent reporting is to be believed, the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks are the two most likely landing spots for Butler. However, NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal recently stated he would like to see the veteran forward land with the Golden State Warriors

“I like him in Golden State,” O'Neal said during an episode of "The Big Podcast." “Because when he was in Miami, he used to drive me crazy, get all the way to the lane and kick it out for a three. I'm like bro, lay the g--damn ball up. So that'll work in Golden State with all of the shooters they've got.”

Golden State has been linked with a potential move for Butler. However, the franchise has reportedly gone cool on moving for the 35-year-old. During a recent episode of FanDuel TV's "Run It Back" The Athletic's Sam Amick confirmed Golden State will likely look elsewhere.

"They don't have interest in giving him the deal that he's waiting for on the other end," Amick said. "And I don't think they're looking to make him a rental and have a strained relationship with him...Their reasoning for not going after Jimmy beyond the money is that, to this point, they've been pretty happy with Andrew Wiggins' play. And, the idea of also giving up Jonathan Kuminga...It is something they're not looking to do. The prospect of Wiggins and Kuminga going out, and Butler coming in, they didn't like how it looked for them."

While O'Neal's point about Butler's playing style is fair and makes sense, his extortionate contract and age make him a poor fit for the Warriors' future plans. Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Joe Lacob have been slowly building for the future. Moving on from Jonathan Kuminga to get Butler through the door would be an unreasonable risk.

For as long as Butler remains on the trade block, he will be linked with peripheral contenders. Unfortunately for him and O'Neal, the Warriors are unlikely to be a legitimate player in his trade sweepstakes. Still, that doesn't mean Golden State doesn't need some fresh talent. It just means that talent is likely to skew toward the younger side.
