10-time WNBA All-Star and 2014 WNBA champion Brittney Griner has found a new home for the 2025 season.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania and Alexa Philippou on Tuesday, Griner has agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Dream after spending her first 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury.

The move will not be official for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft until Saturday, which is when contracts are allowed to be signed.
Although the Las Vegas Aces made a push for Griner, they ended up trading for Jewell Loyd from the Seattle Storm while putting more of a focus on other post players. That ultimately left the door open for Atlanta to make its move.
Founded in 2008, this is clearly the biggest free agent signing in Atlanta's history. Despite making three WNBA Finals appearances in its first six seasons, the Dream have not had a winning record since 2018. With 2022 No. 1 overall pick Rhyne Howard and two-time WNBA All-Star Allisha Gray already on the roster, Griner gives Atlanta a post presence as someone that has averaged 17.7 points, 56.2 % shooting and 7.4 rebounds throughout her career.
Following her wrongful detainment in Russia that lasted almost 10 months and led to her missing the entire 2022 season, Griner has played at an elite level since being freed in a prisoner exchange.
With former Florida Gulf Coast head coach Karl Smesko taking over for former coach Tanisha Wright, the 2025 season presents multiple noteworthy changes for the franchise.
Griner's decision may not be the only one to make headlines for the Mercury. With veteran Dianna Taurasi undecided about her future, this could be the start of a new era for a Mercury franchise that last won the title in 2014.
This is shaping up to be an exciting season for the Dream after a monumental free agent signing. If Griner picks up where she left off with the Mercury, expect the Dream to be serious contenders throughout the season and put an end to their recent struggles.
