The Boston Red Sox are reportedly still looking to address third base.
According to Jon Morosi from MLB Network, the Cardinals and Red Sox recently discussed third baseman Nolan Arenado. While that does not necessarily mean anything more than the two sides checking in, talks may be picking back up after Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that discussions stalled out in January.
Arenado would be a drastic defensive upgrade for the Red Sox. A 10-time Gold Glove winner, Arenado leads all active third basemen with 107 zone runs saved at third. Meanwhile, incumbent third baseman Rafael Devers has led the American League in errors for seven consecutive seasons.
Adding Arenado would also lead to a domino effect for the rest of the roster. Devers could theoretically move to first base, a move that has been considered throughout the offseason. Subsequently, trade rumors have swirled around Triston Casas despite the Red Sox claims that they are not shopping their first baseman.
Moving Devers to a designated hitter role would lead to another possible roster crunch. Masataka Yoshida is an outfielder in name only, having received one inning on defense in 2024. Yoshida has also been the subject of trade rumors, although the Red Sox plan on using him more in the outfield if he is part of the 2025 roster.
Any potential trade will ultimately come down to Arenado. He has a full no-trade clause and already nixed a deal that would have sent him to the Astros. However, John Denton of MLB.com reported that Arenado may be agreeable to a trade to the Red Sox. If such a deal does occur, it could be the start of several additional moves in Boston.
