Rams' Sean McVay makes big admission about Matthew Stafford's future after latest agreement

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford became the subject of some interesting trade rumors in February before the Rams confirmed on Friday that the two sides had worked out an agreement that would keep Stafford with the organization through at least the 2025 season.

While speaking with reporters on Monday, Rams head coach Sean McVay indicated the club and Stafford could go through similar discussions about his future next winter.

"We've taken it a year at a time, and he's earned the right, I believe, to be able to say he can play for a few more years if that's what he wanted," McVay said about Stafford's status, as shared by Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "But we've always had great dialogue, and I really kinda think it's been a year-to-year thing. He's obviously under contract for two more years with us, but as long as he wants to play, I know we're feeling really good about that."

Stafford, who turned 37 years old in February, reportedly declined a request from the Rams following the 2022 season to restructure the contract extension he signed shortly after he guided the club to a win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. He and Los Angeles then agreed to a reworked contract ahead of the 2024 campaign.

More recently, Stafford was due to make $27M for the 2025 season but reportedly wanted to earn closer to $50M per year. On Monday afternoon, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted that the exact details about Stafford's latest agreement with the Rams remained "elusive" as of that time. Also on Monday, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that Stafford took less money than what the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders "proposed paying him as part of a trade."

"Last year, it took about seven months," McVay said about not getting a deal done with Stafford in 2024 until July. "This year, about three weeks. So maybe it'll be about two, three days next year if we have to do this."

McVay added he's "been sleeping better these last couple days" knowing he'll have Stafford as his QB1 for another season. That's all well and good, but it sounds like Stafford and the Rams could break up as soon as March 2026.
