Ideal landing spots for NFL's top remaining free agents

The NFL free-agency period has been open for more than a week, but there’s still plenty of big names on the market. Here’s where we think they should go.

Keenan Allen | WR | Buffalo Bills

At 32 years old, Allen should look to play for a contender. With just five playoff games in his 12-year career, the six-time Pro Bowler needs a team that can get him to Super Bowl LX.

Allen would fit perfectly on the Bills, where QB Josh Allen recently won the NFL’s MVP award. Allen has missed 16 games over the past five seasons but would bring a 17-game average of 1,245 yards and seven touchdowns to a team without a 1,000-yard receiver last season.

Amari Cooper |WR | Tennessee Titans

The 2024 season is one Cooper would like to forget after posting 547 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games with the Browns and Bills. He had 1,250 yards for Cleveland the previous year and scored a career-high nine touchdowns the year before that.

Tennessee traded DeAndre Hopkins away in 2023 and lost Nick Westbrook-Ikhine to the Dolphins this offseason. The Titans still have leading receiver Calvin Ridley but Tyler Boyd remains a free agent.

With the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, there’s a good chance the Titans take a quarterback, possibly Miami’s Cam Ward. If they do, the five-time Pro-Bowler would be an ideal target for the former Hurricane.

Brandin Cooks | WR | New England Patriots

A former first-round pick of the Saints in 2014, Cooks hopes to play for his sixth team in 11 years next season. After posting a career-low 259 yards in 10 games with the Cowboys last season, his days as a No. 1 receiver are clearly over, but he could be an asset to a team with young pass-catchers like New England — he had 1,082 yards with the Patriots in 2017.

No team passed for fewer yards per game (176.1) than the Patriots last season and got only 87 yards in 12 games from second-round rookie Ja’Lynn Polk. Sharing the field with a veteran like Cooks could be just what Polk needs under new head coach Mike Vrabel.

Stefon Diggs | WR | Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys haven’t had a true No. 2 receiver to complement CeeDee Lamb since Cooper had 865 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021, numbers that should be within reach for Diggs, as long as he’s healthy.

A torn ACL limited Diggs to eight games, 496 yards and four total scores with the Texans in 2024, ending his streak of consecutive 1,000-yard seasons at six.

Diggs grew up a Cowboys fan, and his younger brother, CB Trevon Diggs, has been with the Cowboys since 2020. The elder Diggs often talks about playing with his brother, and at 31 years old, this could be his last chance to do so.

Tyler Lockett | WR | Las Vegas Raiders

Lockett made 212 catches for 2,527 yards for Seattle with Geno Smith under center from 2022-24. He had 612 catches and 59 touchdowns under former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll from 2015-23.

Now that Carroll and Smith are with the Raiders, Lockett seems like an ideal candidate to boost the team’s anemic offense. Only three teams scored fewer points per game (18.2) than Las Vegas last season, but veteran receiver Jakobi Meyers did have a career-high 1,027 yards.

With a 4-13 record, the Raiders won't catch the Chiefs next season, but pairing Lockett with Meyers and All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers could get them out of the basement in the AFC West.

Von Miller | LB | Buffalo Bills

With a $23M cap hit for 2025, the Bills had no choice but to release the soon-to-be 36-year-old pass-rusher, but ESPN's Jeremy Fowler describes Miller’s return as a "50-50" proposition.

The veteran linebacker had six sacks in 13 games last year, two fewer than Bills DE Greg Rousseau, who played 456 more snaps than Miller and signed a four-year, $80M contract to stay in Buffalo this offseason. Letting Miller go would still cost the team $15M in dead cap money, so bringing him back could be the best option for both sides.

While his name has been linked to the Bengals, Packers and his home town Dallas Cowboys, the Bills give Miller the best odds (+650) to reach Super Bowl LX  and end his career with a third Super Bowl ring.

Aaron Rodgers |QB| New York Giants

According to multiple reports, the 41-year-old quarterback has standing offers to join the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, although by the sounds of Steelers captain Cameron Heyward, Pittsburgh could be off the table

Aside from Tommy DeVito, the Giants have no quarterbacks signed for 2025 and even if the Giants take Ward or Colorado's Shedeur Sanders in the draft, the team could bring them along slowly, letting them learn under Rodgers the way Rodgers learned under Brett Favre in Green Bay.

Jon Gruden 'looking forward to having the truth come out' amid lawsuit against NFL

Jon Gruden sent another warning shot toward the NFL after scoring a major win in court. On Tuesday, Gruden welcomed a ruling that will force the NFL to litigate the circumstances of his firing in court rather than closed-door arbitration. The former Las Vegas Raiders coach made it clear that he intends to continue his legal challenge to the NFL, ensuring that they are held accountable. “I’m looking forward to having the truth come out, and I want to make sure what happened to me doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Gruden said in a statement provided to ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. “The league’s actions disrupted the whole season. We were leading the division at the time and they completely blindsided me and the team.” The Raiders were 3-1 in 2021 when Gruden was forced to resign after offensive emails he had sent between 2011 and 2018 were leaked. Gruden has alleged that the NFL leaked the emails to force him out of a job after obtaining them during an investigation into the Washington Commanders. The NFL is set to appeal Monday’s ruling, but if that appeal fails, the league may be forced into public discovery. One alternative would be to offer Gruden a settlement, but he has not said whether or not he would be interested in such a resolution. Gruden has not held an NFL coaching job since the Raiders forced him out. He has recently spoken about possibly making a return to coaching at the college level.

Bryson DeChambeau divulges Scottie Scheffler's biggest advantage

We all know Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer on the planet by a fairly large margin, but what makes him so much more consistent than other stars in professional golf? Bryson DeChambeau, one of Scheffler's biggest rivals in major championships, thinks he knows the answer. In Tuesday's appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," DeChambeau detailed how Scheffler dominates the PGA Tour weekly. "He's got the best spin and distance control I've ever seen," DeChambeau said. "He controls the golf ball from a spin perspective so much better than everybody else. Like, if you're 175 yards out, and it's 10 miles [an hour] into the wind, he knows how to control the flight and spin to get that ball to land right next to the hole every time. Probably since Tiger [Woods], he's the best that we've seen." The stats confirm DeChambeau's breakdown. Scheffler has ranked first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach in three straight seasons. He also ranks first in proximity to the hole and greens in regulation percentage over the last four years. Iron play is Scheffler's superpower, but it wasn't always that way. "I played with him in college a bunch, and I've said it before, but he's definitely improved since college for sure," DeChambeau said with a chuckle. "It's impressive to see what he's done, and we're all aspiring to do that. That's something I've gotta get better at. I can hit it farther than him. I can hit it probably straighter than him. I can make just as many putts as him, but, really, it's about my iron play right now and wedges to get a little more consistent." Iron play is the biggest indicator of success in professional golf. If you're giving yourself more birdie chances from close range than anyone in the field, you're going to have the best chance to win by Sunday afternoon. No one is better at hitting specific distances more consistently than Scheffler. Just look at how accurate he is. DeChambeau has the best chance to catch Scheffler as the best player in the world because he's elite off the tee and on the greens, but that won't happen unless he makes a major improvement to his iron game.

Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger Makes Direct Statement About Mason Rudolph's Spot On QB Depth Chart

The Pittsburgh Steelers have quite an interesting quarterback room for the 2025 season. Of course, all the focus is truly on Aaron Rodgers and what he can bring to the team at this stage in his career. Behind him, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph serving as the primary backup. Skylar Thompson and Will Howard are competing for the third spot on the depth chart, but unfortunately for Howard, an injury has slowed his progress. Thompson took advantage of the opportunity, performing well in the first preseason game and possibly reclaiming the QB3 role. Before his injury, Howard had previously moved ahead of Thompson in the competition. Former teammate of Rudolph, Ben Roethlisberger, recently shared his honest thoughts about the veteran quarterback’s performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Roethlisberger, who spent years with Rudolph during his time in Pittsburgh, had a unique perspective on how his former understudy handled the game. While Roethlisberger acknowledged there were some areas where Rudolph could improve, he also praised his composure, decision-making, and ability to move the offense when needed. Roethlisberger discussed Rudolph’s performance on his Footbahlin podcast, noting that the veteran looked confident and in control despite limited opportunities. "You know I thought Mason [Rudolph] played really well," Roethlisberger said on his podcast. "I thought he did exactly what you would hope to see from your backup quarterback. He went out there I think, he solidified himself… as the two." He pointed out that Rudolph’s familiarity with the Steelers’ system allows him to step in without disrupting the flow of the offense. With Rodgers leading the way, Rudolph providing a steady backup presence, and the QB3 competition between Thompson and Howard continuing, the Steelers’ quarterback depth will be a storyline worth following as the 2025 season approaches. "Let’s see how he does this week and the next week," Roethlisberger said. "I thought he played really well. I thought he was efficient with the ball. He threw the ball down the field. As a team, you like seeing that because that gives you confidence going into the season that if something were to happen one game for Aaron… you have a guy that you feel confident who could go in there. Same thing when we had Charlie Batch, you had Bruce Gradkowski, you had Byron Leftwich, you had Dennis Dixon and Josh Dobbs. Any of those guys. You just feel confident he can go in and just get it done for you." Roethlisberger had high praise for Rudolph, and hearing him mention him alongside names like Charlie Batch shows he has faith in Rudolph’s ability to be a reliable backup in Pittsburgh. There is a strong argument that Rudolph is one of the most dependable backup quarterbacks in the NFL, which is a significant asset for the Steelers in the 2025 season. Steelers' Mason Rudolph Has Great Preseason Game Versus Jaguars Rudolph only attempted 10 passes on Saturday night against the Jaguars, but completed 90 percent of them. He threw for 84 yards and one touchdown. While preseason football can be difficult to evaluate, he performed well in roughly a quarter and some change of action. His efficiency and composure reinforced the notion that the Steelers have one of the league’s most steady and trustworthy backup quarterbacks heading into the regular season. Roethlisberger is confident Rudolph has now locked up his spot as QB2 for the 2025 season. Steelers fans are now super eager to get updates on when Howard will be back from his injury. Howard and Thompson will fight for the QB3 spot. What grade would you give Rudolph for his preseason outing against the Jaguars?

Ex-NBA player Sebastian Telfair hoping for pardon from Donald Trump

Ex-NBA player Sebastian Telfair hoping for pardon from Donald Trump

Sebastian Telfair is preparing to serve six months in prison but is hoping for some help from President Donald Trump. Telfair was among the former NBA players who were charged in 2021 with defrauding the NBA’s Health and Welfare Benefit Plan of approximately $358,000 in fake medical and dental claims. The former first-round pick was initially given a three-year suspended sentence that involved supervised release. But he violated the terms of his suspended sentence, which led to him being sentenced in June to six months in prison. Telfair was getting ready to report to prison and pleaded for the president to step in and pardon him. “Trump, go check in on my story and you’re definitely going to want to pardon me. You’ll hold me accountable and want me to continue to go do good. But I did too good to being sending anybody to jail,” Telfair argued in comments to a reporter from TMZ. Telfair contends that his recent issue is due to a paperwork problem. He feels the resulting sentence he’s received is “super unfair.” Whether President Trump is able to hear his case and pardon him remains to be seen, but Telfair is definitely trying. Telfair, 40, is from Brooklyn, N.Y., and developed a big following as a teenager due to his strong basketball play. He was the No. 13 overall pick in 2004 by Portland and began his career with them as a 19-year-old straight out of high school. Telfair played 10 seasons in the NBA and spent time with eight different teams. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 assists per game during his career.
