How the boldness of Derik Queen got Maryland into the Sweet 16

The Maryland Terrapins haven't been to the Sweet 16 since 2016. This past weekend in a Round 2 matchup with 12-seed Colorado State, the No. 4 Terrapins found themselves on the verge of a massive upset that would have kept that Sweet 16 drought going.

They were down 71-70 with just seconds left after a Jalen Lake three-pointer for the Rams. Terps head coach Kevin Willard called a timeout with 3.7 seconds left and drew up a play to get freshman Derik Queen the ball.

The result of that play was a game-winning shot from the freshman.

After the game, Willard explained that Queen wanted that moment, despite the fact that he's only a freshman.

"Sometimes, you can draw something up for a guy that maybe doesn't want the basketball, and his exact words were, 'I want the MF ball,'" Willard explained, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN. "So once he said that, it was a pretty simple decision."

Getting the ball to Queen was a simple decision by Willard, but the freshman's shot was anything but simple. Running fadeaways off the glass don't usually go in, but Queen was up to the moment — this, despite the fact that he's never hit a game-winner before.

"That was my first game winner. When coach drew up the play, my teammates trusted me and he trusted me. I was a little bit nervous, but I knew we was due for one and I had to -- had to -- make this," the phenom freshman explained.

A potential lottery pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, Queen averaged 16.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Terrapins this season.

His boldness on the bench in a tense situation and his ability to make the shot kept Maryland's March Madness hopes alive. Up next for the Terps is a Sweet 16 matchup with No. 1 Florida.
