MLS is putting an end to an unusual arrangement involving Lionel Messi and his personal bodyguard.

Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has been banned from the touchline during matches. MLS changed its security protocol, and on-pitch security will instead be handled by the league.

Cheuko will still be permitted to accompany Messi off the field, but did not sound happy with the change.

“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” Cheuko told Spanish media, via Reuters. “I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch. I came to the USA and in just 20 months 16 people have already done so. There’s a huge problem here, let me help Messi.”

Cheuko had become well-known among viewers for his unusual role. The Iraq and Afghanistan veteran could often be seen stalking the touchline during Inter Miami games, and intervened whenever a pitch invader came anywhere near Messi.

Given Messi’s fame, it is understandable that he would have his own security arrangement. It is also understandable that MLS would want full control of match security, though it is fair to wonder if they will be able to protect Messi as effectively as Cheuko has. Hopefully Messi’s form doesn’t suffer the same way the Philadelphia Eagles struggled when the NFL briefly banned Big Dom from the sideline.
