Three storylines for Valero Texas Open: Is it Tommy Fleetwood's time?

The PGA Tour has one last stop before the best players in the world congregate at Augusta National Golf Club for the 2025 Masters. Let's check out the three juiciest storylines for the Masters tune-up at the Valero Texas Open.

Tommy Fleetwood should take notes from Min Woo Lee

We highlighted Lee as a contender to snag his first PGA Tour victory at the Texas Children's Houston Open last week, and that's exactly what he did. Let's roll with a similar strategy this week — this time with Fleetwood.

It's almost shocking that Fleetwood still hasn't won on the PGA Tour. The talented Englishman has eight international wins, 38 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and has been a staple on the European Ryder Cup team for nearly a decade. Fleetwood is going to win on Tour eventually, and this week is as good as any.

The 34-year-old hasn't finished worse than T16 in six worldwide starts this year, and he finished T7 in his Valero Texas Open debut last season. With no Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and others in the field at TPC San Antonio, this is Fleetwood's time to finally end the drought.

Hideki Matsuyama, Tony Finau and Max Homa searching for momentum ahead of the Masters

More than a handful of big names are struggling leading up to the first major championship of the season. Matsuyama went cold after his season-opening win at The Sentry and missed the cut in his last start at the Players Championship.

Finau has more missed cuts (three) than top-10 finishes (one) this year.

And Homa — well, Homa has missed four straight cuts and has only one top-20 finish since his T3 at the Masters last year.

Matsuyama, Finau and Homa are typically high up on the list of contenders at Augusta National, but that's not looking like the case right now. A strong week at TPC San Antonio would do wonders for their confidence.

Jordan Spieth's final tune-up before his return to Augusta

Spieth is still working his way back from wrist surgery, but he's shown some glimpses of his old self this year with a T4 at the WM Phoenix Open and the T9 at the Cognizant Classic. Professional golf is better with Spieth near the top of the leaderboard, and he's done that quite often at Augusta National over the years.

In 11 career starts at the Masters, Spieth has a win and six top-five finishes. The American missed the cut last year during a period of injuries and a loss of confidence, but he's starting to find some form again. One last tune-up in his home state of Texas should give us an idea of how ready Spieth is to contend for another green jacket.
